My current career in academia validates what my career as a banker (old-fashioned, "evaluate the business, help it to grow" banker), taught me that the successful business owner has to have the ability to pull it all together. No one skill stands alone or can carry weaker ones for long. The "why" or value to the "who" or customer of the product or service, the "when" and "where" timely and efficient sales and fulfillment, the "what" and the "how" of staffing, funding, accounting, and technological applications, and the ability to learn from relevant feedback and adjust to the situation. While oversimplified in this brief statement, there are layers of complexity depending upon the nature of the business, especially as to technology.

In the world of entrepreneurship, strategic thinking is an indispensable skill. It involves setting clear goals and devising a roadmap to achieve them. Take the example of Elon Musk, whose strategic vision transformed multiple industries. From electric vehicles with Tesla to space exploration through SpaceX, his ability to think strategically has been the key to his success. When starting your own business, it's crucial to envision your long-term objectives, understand market trends, and adapt your strategies accordingly.

In my experience, strategic thinking shouldn't be the first skill when starting a business. Instead, I would argue that "Problem solving" should the first, because before any strategic decision there needs to be "something of value", an "essence" of what you are doing and why "your way" is best. Only then you can start thinking "where" that value would be most beneficial by means of understanding competitors, industries, mission, vision and values (strategic thinking). This approach comes as a "bottom-up" view where you deeply understand the problem and look at the minute details of your solution, which will give you a fair advantage to understand the broader strategic foresight needed to make a successful business model.

I've started three very different businesses in my career and I knew very little about each of the industries I was entering. One common denominator is that each time I had confidence in my capacity to learn, my organization skills, my willingness to feel like an imposter and do it anyway, my ability to build a network, and my insane determination to make it happen. You can hire people for the rest!

There can be little doubt that financial management is critical to future success. My late father, who was a highly successful entrepreneur in his own right, went on to establish himself in academe as well. His wisdom extends into finance as well. As he said on more than one occasion, "Your enterprise has only one way to communicate with you ... through the numbers." You don't have to be an expert in this area, but you must absolutely be able to interpret what the business or the financial expert you have on board is telling you regarding what your business is trying to tell you. Whether you are THE finaicial wizard or you are only listening to him/her ... you MUST understand what your are seeing or hearing.

Not everyone who starts up a business is conversant with financial terms to interpret and understand what is going on however, it is important as a founder to have financial knowledge especially areas that core to financial discipline of the business. Understanding performance, Cash flows, Solvency and Profits. Even if you assign other people to deal with those complications, you should be able to understand and ask relevant questions to help make informed decisions.

Negotiating, negotiating with suppliers, employees, anything that is for the benefit of the business and you need it. Order and organization, to build orderly work processes based on a correct organizational culture. The rest of the things even with basic knowledge, learning and with the help of professionals we can still run a business.

What I'm seeing, however, based upon my experience, are skills that are a little difficult to find in one person. If you are able to think critically, you might find that you may, as you continue on down the road to eventual success, be able to bring others on board with those critical skills. Coming from a completely non-business related background (science ftw!), in my opinion, the #1 key skill when starting your own business is *the drive to keep learning* ?? My career is not a conventional one. I started in academia and there, picked up different business administration skills by framing decisions through the lens of "how will this (eventually) help me run my business". I also use resources such as LinkedIn Learning, local training programs, books etc. to help plug knowledge gaps that arise, especially after I started running my company (Learning about Google Analytics, anyone?).
