It's hard to know your sales, but the need to predict exists all the same. Use three-way product aging. Initial, Ongoing & Decline. Initial Sales likely to rise faster. Add for sales growth. Ongoing Sales likely to stay flat. Use current history. Decline Sales are falling off. Expect sales to trend down. Have a gameplan for your products. Many are in the steady state phase. Will it continue? If yes, trending is fine. Do you have a product on the rise? Be optimistic and add more than this year. Declining product forecasts depends on your hopes. Do you use promotion (a risky path) or should they just die? This will give you a solid base to work from. Allow for market share battles, loss leaders, etc. Also, do some market surveys.
