We use SQL Agent Job to automate backups, index rebuilds and reorganize, Database performance and database restores. ETL packages is also automated through SQL Agent Job using SSIS catalogs, package store and File system.

In my own experience, a flexible ecosystem like Kubernetes is a good example of how most of the security and Devops requirements can be seamlessly integrated while ensuring there is minimal-to-no impact to overall availability of services. In start-ups and orgs not dealing with sensitive data, usually less process heavy, the adoption of GitOps and automations are scaling efficiently, paving the way forward. Other industries like finance and telco should also follow the suit, in due time, and adopt these methodologies

I was once the solo DBA at a business with 30+ developers working on multiple apps and all wanting varying ad hoc access to production systems. Too many for me to police directly. Instead I set up a process where, once a change was approved, I would grant the required access to any changes going on that day, but I had an automated process that ran every evening and removed all permissions granted that day. It used a table of allowed permissions and a cut off date, which meant that engineers investigating issues could have multi-day permissions for their work, while those involved in software releases just got theirs for the day. So I could get on with the rest of my job without having to chase people down later.

You should absolutely automate your performance reporting. However, I would strongly caution against automating performance improvements, especially in production environments, or cloud based ones where you are paying for every IO call or CPU cycle. Performance reporting will quickly allow you to focus in on performance bottlenecks, whether in code or infrastructure. But most automated performance recommendations need to be properly evaluated and tested. Too many of them are led astray by wild query plans, divergent parameter values or skewed data profiles/histograms. Intelligent query optimisation apps and packages are getting better, but not so that I would trust them on performance sensitive environments unsupervised.
