What are the most effective ways to write a discussion section in your research project?

I somewhat agree. It’s indeed important to avoid repeating your results. Moreover, in my experience, I find it effective to focus partly on an introduction to the discussion section itself that flows nicely as well.

Yes, very short summary. As in. “The purpose of this study was … to be able to …. The data showed [recap of main themes/grouped used in result chapter]. Then I typically sum up the 3-5 main discussion point from the paper, which are then explained in the following paragraphs through relating to the background section, prior research etc.

There is always a real risk that you move to being more descriptive by outlining all of the tge findings from the results again at a very micro level. The discussion then becomes more descriptive in nature rather than framing and contrasting with existing literature to highlight your contribution.

I agree with starting with a summary for the reader to smoothly transition throughout the paper. The most important point is that the discussion should state the significance of the findings and should not be a rewrite of the findings. The discussion section should show exactly what the research adds to the existing works of literature.

A discussion section needs to respond to the research question/s in a coherent way. As a qualitative researcher, I might begin with stating what my qualitative aim was in conducting the research in the way I did. It is crucial to justify why you undertook the research in the way you did. Reiterate what your research intention was.

Reviewers have never met a first round submission of a discussion section they liked. Getting the balance between reviewing your results, comparing with existing literature, and suggesting future extensions is about personal taste - more art than science. As a result, I think your first submission needs to be good enough. Check the boxes suggested here (summarize, compare, discuss limitations, describe implications, etc.) but don't get too attached. Papers don't get rejected for the discussion. In fact, they rarely need to be revised for the discussion. But they do need to be revised and those revisions impact your discussion. So my advice: check the boxes and then follow your reviewers' advice in getting the balance right.

I agree, and try to explain (preferably by using the research of others) to explain why your data may be the way it is. Also if there are no clear resources on this outcome, try to make your assumptions explicit, while being clear in your phrasing that you are guessing. ‘This may/could be a result of…’,

Do not need to overlook at the literature but is important to focus on the main papers and the key message that you want to deliver in regards to how your paper confirm or advance knowledge related to the field of study of your paper.

This some time is tricky, most scientific writers are afraid of report the limitations of the study because they think is going to provide reviewers arguments for rejecting the paper. If the paper provide enough novelty and it scientifically sound, acknowledging the limitation will actually add value to it. The reviewers usually like to see that you recognize that there are limitation in the study. So if you know there are limitations do not be afraid to bring them up

I sometimes feel researchers taje the easy way out here and talk of global limitations that could apply to any research. E.g., needs a larger sample size etc. This section is often disappointing in many works.

Future research should volunteer a roadmap or agenda of necessary work. Many hold back for fear their future publishing agenda may be revealed. Be generous is my advice.

Yes this is a critical points show that you are thinking ahead with your work, if somebody is working in a similar project, which are usually things that you are already working on of moving towards.

It is very important to build the flow of your discussion to make very easy and enjoyable to read. You do not want the reviewer or reader to have to read your discussion many times to understand the key message/s. A useful exercise is to build a simple scheme where you write the key points that you are going to discuss and arrange them in a way that and build running sentence in between these sections that can connect them. Avoid to discuss the same point into two or more section of the discussion will confuse the reader.

I will add that it's important to understand a given journal's style in this section. Some journals value different things (e.g., managerial implications).
