What are the most effective ways to use statistics to refute a counterargument?

For example, instead of saying "few" or "most", cite a simple statistic such as (for example) 18% or 83%, and state the source (e.g., according to Wall Street Journal research) to add credibility to what you are pronouncing. That will give your audience solid credibility to accept what you are saying.

The *what* and *when* matter more than the numbers themselves. Otherwise, you're just showing off data that pretty much anyone can pull with a quick SFDC query or ChatGPT inquiry. Synthesis is everything. If your statistics aren't telling a story, they're annoying (or worse, boring) your audience. Speaking of which, please do not throw a bunch of a big figures on the first slide of your sales pitch and label it "Our Story". If you don't understand your stats or the precise impact you want them to make on listeners, don't include them. Likewise, not every stat needs to be spoken or even shown – keep some in your back pocket for Q&A, especially those questions that interrupt you mid-flow. TLDR: context-sensitive stats help, the rest do not.

One thing that I’ve noticed, is that many of the people that I work with prefer spreadsheets of information to infographics. I have found that management is best done by studying infographics on KPI‘s as it relates to trends. Just as important as context is knowing where the stats come from, and the precise wording used for the research. We see quite regularly the same information used support all sides of an argument.

Very important point. Also, when analyzing data, just as with research in general, it is important to understand where the data is coming from and who funds, or is responsible for its generation. This may help identify biases or incomplete data.

The problem as I've observed it is less that statistics are just wrong or phony. It's more that people misstate what they are saying. For example, there was recently some new data about divorce among same-sex couples in the US. The data said that 70% (approx.) of divorces among same-sex couples were in relationships involving two women. Within a couple days, people online were quoting this stat saying that the divorce rate among same-sex female couples was 70%. That's not what the stat said at all. Above all, it is important to understand statistics as a mathematical discipline. One early insight I had is that the information we apply statistical methods to, is inexact. Statistics properly applied will tell us how inexact our data are : through confidence intervals, which rest on probability theory -- the whole discipline of inferential statistics. And to understand probability brings with it a habit of mind that always thinks with concepts of measuring uncertainty, of estimating just how fuzzy our assertions are, or are likely to be, if we don't yet have the information on which to base assertions. When public speaking, if it appears effortless in your presentation, then it is far more impressive to the audience.

Many people remember visual representations. But be sure to personify the data. Is there an individual who illustrates the facts you are presenting?

I’m gonna take this in another direction, I’m a therapist. Couples and families come into my office and share deep experiences. And stats comes up. You’ll hear, “You know research shows…” then everyone looks at me for a response. I smile, and ask, “What are your best hopes in telling each other these stats?” The answer: “That they will tell me I’m right!” And that’s the message I want to send on here: is being right going to help you?
