I’d also, with older children, ask them which manipulatives would be appropriate to use to see whether they have the metacognitive skills.

In my experience inquiry based learning is usually more effective. Therefore, if the teacher will show them how the manipulatives are used they'll be confined with only one way. Instead it'll be a great idea to provide these manipulatives to students and ask them 'How can we use these to learn specific mathematical concepts'. For example after giving them the cubes ask them to use the cubes for addition, and let them explore how cubes can be used for addition. Through this they'll explore more ways of doing the same thing.

Yes I agree. Representing an idea in many different forms helps students to make better connections. In Gr 5, we were learning about division. For a given division equation, the concept of equal sharing was linked with repeated subtraction during the demonstration or modelling stage. This helped students to relate the equation with a real life situation and represent their understanding through drawing. Encouraging students to use shapes and numbers to make visual representation helps in breaking down and analysing problem. They were also able to think and come up with new situations to suit the same equation. Reading each others problem give students an understanding of different types of situations and was very interesting for kids.

The best manipulative assignment I use is something called hands on equations . You need numbers cubes and pawns you use in a chess set. Students start to understand the concept of double ngo the same thing to each side of the equation until you have one pawn and one number left . This has really helped me teach the abstract concept of balancing equations to students .
