I totally agree we need to use reference material in very first step, that's how we can get ideas, and styles and reference for our main shot, to be able to make storyboard based on it, and make it almost realistic upon progressing.

Talk to the other people involved with the scenario the effect will be used for. In a perfect world our instructions are complete and accurate the first time we see them. In reality a lot can get lost in the translation to text. Even if there isn’t any inaccuracy in the work description, talking with the people upstream/downstream of you in the pipeline can be a great way to foresee the need for variations, find other systems to that can beneficially tie into your effect, and avoid a lot of potentially unnecessary iteration.
