Gamification can be a good way to teach UI and UX if you consider diverse students' learning needs. For example, some students could be introverts. Some introverts tend to thrive in small groups and individual activities. If you choose to use gamification, be sure to give students options to opt-out or play anonymously. For example, you could do a virtual quiz and allow students to participate with anonymous user names - this solves removing competition and allows introverts to feel less pressured. Structure the game elements to be self-paced learning and set clear goals.

I would take really bad UX examples and do weekly group sessions to analyze and dissect the products. This activity can teach them what is bad/good/great in terms of UX in a fun way. And what they learn, will certainly be memorable!

In my opinion, teaching UI and UX design using gamification described here wouldn’t be effective. It’ll create a competitive rather than a cooperative learning environment. A much better approach is what Cenk mentioned. Review different product experiences and break down what is working and what isn’t. Better yet, bring in the designers who built them so you can be an insider’s perspective.

I think it can be summed up very easily: UX is like a joke. If you have to explain it, it's really not that good. Google is an amazing example of this, so I would start by showing some extremely stripped down services, and build from there.

In the past, my students have gained valuable experience by working alongside real-world clients. You can provide interactive scenarios where students can make decisions and learn from real-world examples. For example, simulate the process of designing to reduce the spread of false information on Instagram.

The best way to learn something new is to do it by yourself. Mix the design basics (composition, colors, typography, and others) with some best practices and teach the material in small chunks. Think about two or three projects that will make the students use the basics and explore best practices to create their solution for the project. Microlearning can be helpful AFTER you design your personalized learning paths for your students. Creating personalized learning paths that align with their interests and abilities will empower students to take ownership of their learning. Then, you can add microlearning within the learning path by breaking down more prominent topics or learning objectives into smaller, manageable pieces. Consider sequencing content within the learning path and ensure each module builds upon the previous one to create a smooth learning journey.

From my perspective. I would overlay a combination of learning tools that include business cases, color theory, space/aspect ratio, even pulling out examples of century old advertisements. The root of UI design is print advertising with flavors of blue prints. Every successful UI designer needs to understand management of color theory, space, visual weight, and ratios, combined with graphics, text, audio, and video. Once students have a business case's visual characteristics defined, the next step would be to formulate the UX plan. Combination of user actions and backend function define the UX experience for the user. Like looking at a cake reipe with ingredients and detailed instructions and graphic examples.

In addition to just storytelling, I like to give personalized education. Using the knowledge of experience from each person's background gives you a much better chance that they can apply the learnings. Finding common ground between the new knowledge they’re trying to learn and the existing knowledge they have is a much faster path to comprehension as the AHA moment unlocks more motivation and adds momentum to learning.

Stories are easier to remember than statistics, making them an essential tool. As a UX Designer, I used a comic to explain accessibility to my team. The comic showed a snowy day at a school where a student in a wheelchair asked the person shoveling snow to clear the ramp first instead of the stairs. The shoveler was hesitant, but the student in the wheelchair gently countered that removing snow from the ramp would allow everyone to enter. The story had a powerful impact on my team. It made them realize the importance of accessibility & led them to integrate it into their workflow. Teaching storytelling is a key skill but only inherent to some. It requires training & practice to master the art of storytelling. Stories inspire change.

A great way to achieve this is to hold time for group feedback discussions where each student gives one piece of feedback, monitored by the teacher. Coursera's online peer review feedback feature is a bad example of peer feedback because students still need the teacher to review the designs. Consider one-on-one feedback sessions with students at certain milestones of the project. Be sure to have follow-ups to encourage design iteration for students to update and refine their designs.

Get students to test it with real audiences and document feedback. There is a component of heuristics that requires to constantly evolve and adjust as per the local audience. UX/UI are placeholders, we are interaction designers. Learning interaction has to do with finding a task or goal and seeing how to accomplish it using an interface. Have students complete a task in any interface. Then have them give that task to another and observe them completing it. Have them coax the person to articulate how they are thinking. This is crucial to learning that what people say and do is very different from how they experience and react. That is the crux of learning why this field isn't like any other.
