1. Keep it as short as possible. The best reels I've seen are under two minutes. One minute is perfect. 2. Include in your portfolio only those works that you want to attract in the future. 3. Be relevant. Don't show game trailers to advertising professionals, you need to show them to game studios and don't show commercials to a corporate b2b audience, it's better to show them video presentation examples. 4. Sound and montage might strengthen the overall impression of your portfolio, so make sure to spend some time to set them right. 5. Differentiate your portfolio from others because there are too many studios. You need to stand out somehow from all of them and show your uniqueness.

I think of it in a triangle of sorts: Context, Audience, and Message. Where all parts are of the same importance. The right format will be the one that solves these three issues. If showing animation at a Kid's entertainment event, for example, you want to think of the context as a need to stand out from the rest, in a very short time where you must showcase your unique differential. The audience will be executives in search of excellent animation. While the message would be that of your work or your company: what are you the best at? So, instead of compromising for a jack-of-all-trades animation reel, you should aim to showcase your unique differential to your desired niche, in a professional but fun way.

When curating your portfolio content, it's important to select your best and most recent work that showcases your range of skills, styles, and genres. You should also tailor your portfolio to the event and the audience, researching the event theme, attendees, and potential opportunities beforehand. Think again of the Context-Audience-Message triangle from above. What's your best content that will most likely appeal to your audience present at the event? You may have done an incredible 3D animation, but if that's not what you want to focus on in the future, you should leave it out and stick to showcasing your 2D/cel animation work, unless you think this work highlights something more important (past big client, a very stylized aesthetic, etc). But it should be short and to the point. A big mistake animators and agencies make, is to have too much of everything in a single reel.
