This is impressive when I interview people to join, but I’ve never had or encouraged an existing employee to build a portfolio of their work. I’d wonder why the team member was working on their portfolio and not the assigned work.

Your expertise needs to be relatable. If your boss is also an engineer, explains why your expertise matters to him as an engineer, show benchmark and technical details. If your boss values monetary impact, explains why your expertise could help increase revenue or reduce costs. You need to show an actual example on what did you do, and how it impact the values your boss understands.
