Don't wait for your boss to tell you what to do or assign you tasks. Instead, proactively identify areas where you can contribute, improve, or innovate. Apart from what has been mentioned, other key skills are... Be positive and proactive, embrace change & challenges with open arms, be available & have solution-oriented approach, encourage customer as well as people centricity, be a thought leader, develop next level leadership and walk the talk.
In the hustle of office life, being a leader isn't about titles; it's about taking charge. Don't play the waiting game for assignments; carve your own path. Scan the landscape, spot the gaps, and be the remedy. Step up, pitch your ideas with zeal, and connect the dots between your solutions and the team's vision. Initiative isn't a buzzword; it's the secret sauce to transform routine tasks into impactful contributions. So, embrace the driver's seat, and let your proactive spirit be the catalyst for positive change in the workplace.
An example I like to use is an overflowing garbage can. Most people will walk past it while a leader will empty it. Most people do things as assigned while leaders do things as indicated. In this case, it was indicated that the garbage can needed to be emptied. The lesson here is to step up and start solving problems, like an overflowing garbage can before your boss has to tell you to do it. Volunteer to help and ask for additional responsibilities. Most people will only do the bear minimum. Identify problems, and more importantly, propose solutions and show how they align with the team's goals. Then offer to see the solution through, if it's within your scope. If you put in a little extra, you'll go from ordinary to extraordinary.
I've consistently taken initiative by identifying areas for improvement and proposing innovative solutions. For instance, I spearheaded a project to streamline internal processes, resulting in increased efficiency and team collaboration.
Be the leader you want to be. There is no one on earth that will tell you to be less of a leader. Take every opportunity to step up, before someone else does.

This means not only expressing your thoughts and opinions clearly and respectfully, but also listening actively and empathetically to others. To communicate effectively with your boss, you need to keep them informed of your progress, achievements, and challenges. You also need to ask for feedback, guidance, and support when needed, and show appreciation and recognition for their input and assistance. Moreover, you need to communicate effectively with your colleagues, customers, and stakeholders, and build positive and collaborative relationships with them.

Leaders don't just voice their thoughts; they lend an ear, absorbing ideas with empathy. To navigate the corporate orchestra, keep your boss in the loop—update them on victories, struggles, and seek their insights. Communication isn't a one-way street; it's a dialogue that thrives on feedback, guidance, and mutual respect. Extend this harmony to colleagues and stakeholders, building bridges with clear, appreciative, and collaborative conversations. Because in leadership, the magic happens when words create connections.
Uno de los temas que con frecuencia olvidamos los líderes es el feedback, y en mi opinión, constituye la piedra angular de la comunicación efectiva. Lo planteo en los siguientes puntos: a. Es oportuno. Al adoptarlo como una rutina, proporcionamos oportunidades de desarrollo continuo; no deberíamos limitarnos a hacerlo anualmente. b. Implica comunicación bidireccional. No se trata únicamente de dar feedback en una sola vía, sino de crear un espacio para una conversación genuina, fomentando un ambiente en el que las personas puedan expresar sus preocupaciones y dudas. Apuntar a una conversación efectiva, centrándose en el feedback como piedra angular, permite generar cambios positivos de manera continua.
The framework that I share with my EMS leaders is The Key 3--Communication, Mindset, and Empathy. Communication is a skill that will help you learn about your peers and your patients or clients. Relationships are built one conversation at a time and it's diverse relationships that help a leader succeed. Communication is crucial to sharing a vision, giving direction, and seeking feedback. If the message is to be considered successfully communicated, action needs to happen. Mentors and coaches can help you develop the skill of communication and you can get better at it with practice. If you fumble, it's a learning opportunity and not a failure.
Just show by doing and being. Become and act like the leader you want to be. Communicate your ideas and instructions clearly and concisely. Leaders are effective communicators who can convey complex information in a way that is easily understood. Demonstrate active listening skills by paying attention to others, asking thoughtful questions, and providing constructive feedback. This enhances collaboration and contributes to a positive team environment.
Effective communication with my boss has been pivotal in building a transparent and collaborative work environment. Regular updates on project milestones, coupled with proactive sharing of challenges, have fostered a sense of trust and understanding.
A third way to show your leadership skills is to lead by example and set high standards for yourself and others. This means not only delivering quality work on time and within budget, but also demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and accountability. You need to show your boss that you are reliable, responsible, and trustworthy, and that you can handle pressure, uncertainty, and change. You also need to show your boss that you are a role model for your peers and subordinates, and that you can inspire, motivate, and empower them to perform well and grow.
If you begin with leading yourself, then you will be able to lead others through example. I always appreciated bosses that would jump into the mix of things and support us, show us they understood what was going on, and when needed, showed us the way. I adopted the lead by example mantra and find it effective to inspire others. You're not there to do their work or to do it every time. Your role is to fan the embers occasionally, but let the fire burn on its own.
Handling pressure and uncertainty with resilience has highlighted my adaptability. Being a reliable and responsible team member has fostered a culture of trust and collaboration, creating a positive and growth-oriented work environment.
This is KEY! Leading by example is perhaps the most all encompassing way to show your boss your leadership skills. You can do this by taking initiative, displaying effective communication, proactively seeking new ways to grow, learn and develop new skills, as well as accepting and learning from feedback, being open and adaptable to change, and helping guide your team. By modelling these positive behaviours, you will show your boss and your colleagues that you have strong leadership skills and that you are committed to the team’s (and organization’s) overall success.
We look up to someone to mentor us, guide us. We also tend to admire someone and follow their methedologies... But it is true that someone else is looking up to us and following our steps. So it is a very important step in life to lead as an Example.
Two things are really important to know. The first is how the formal authority you have through your position allows you to be an effective leader - managing tasks, presenting new initiatives etc. But you also have to know how your informal authority allows you to take leadership actions - explained below. There are many ways to learn from your boss. But there are also many ways to learn from individuals you interact with in the workplace from various departments. The latter can help you grow by exposing you to different parts of the work of your organisation that you did not consider before. Knowledge of work across departments contributes to more informed decisions and less likely that new initiatives will not go unnoticed or fail.
A fourth way to show your leadership skills is to learn and grow continuously and seek new challenges and opportunities. Leaders are not complacent or satisfied with the status quo. They are always curious, eager, and open to learn new things, acquire new skills, and expand their knowledge and perspectives. To show your boss that you are a leader who learns and grows, you need to seek feedback, reflect on your strengths and weaknesses, and act on your areas of improvement. You also need to seek new challenges and opportunities, and show your willingness and readiness to take on more responsibilities, roles, or projects.
Two more things that can be added are unlearning and re-learning. There are some of the thought processes that are outdated or doesn't add any value and a leader should know when it's time to unlearn them. Also, we have learnt so many things during our life and if we ever find in a position that certain skills are of utmost importance now but if its again outdated and need to be updated, leaders should be ready to re-learn them.
Again, The Key 3, communication, mindset, and empathy play a role. Adopting a growth mindset, to continually learn and improve will help you grow as a leader. Learn new skills and seek to use your new skills doing things beyond your general duties and responsibilities. Your mindset should include a shift to failures are opportunities for improvement and learning. You can't do things, *YET* but you will. You should never settle for the status quo.

We learn throughout our childhood in school. But this is something which we need to do, hence many of us do it. But post graduation, we tend to take a very long break from learning. In this case it is not learning as in school or college, we have to push ourselves and attain knowledge with our own interest. When we stop to learn, we stop to grow. This is a philosophy that I personally vouch for. Hence learning is the key trait that enables us to reach new heights.
A fifth way to show your leadership skills is to be flexible and adaptable, and embrace change and innovation. Leaders are not rigid or resistant to change. They are agile, resilient, and creative. They can adapt to different situations, contexts, and expectations, and find new ways to solve problems, overcome obstacles, and achieve goals. To show your boss that you are a leader who is flexible and adaptable, you need to be open to feedback, suggestions, and changes, and show your ability and willingness to adjust your plans, strategies, or behaviors accordingly. You also need to be open to new ideas, technologies, and methods, and show your curiosity and enthusiasm for innovation and improvement.
En mi opinión, basada en mi experiencia en el mundo corporativo, creo firmemente que las organizaciones actuales requieren un liderazgo con las siguientes características: a. Resiliencia: es tener la capacidad de resolver situaciones complejas en un mundo tan dinámico como el actual, generando soluciones ante la incertidumbre. b. Adaptabilidad: La capacidad de cambiar estrategias cuando se requiera, motivándose con una mentalidad positiva en situaciones de mayor desafío. How quick you are able to adapt to situations showcases your ability to overcome challenges and obstacles. Flexibility and adaptability are the two traits inherent in any leader. If you are able to understand and solve complicated problems, adjust strategies according to changing circumstances; this showcases a resilient and forward thinking mind. As leaders these traits should be a second nature.
I happened to work in a team that was given flexibility, the results were beautiful. Whereas the other team which I happened to hear about in the same concern had difficulty in performing. It is a key to be flexible, but we also need to be adaptable. If flexibility is less, then we need to adapt to the need and fill in. This will enable us to outperform our old self and be a leader within the team. So think where you are with respect to flexibility and adaptability.

Cuando desarrollo formaciones, las personas pasamos o bien por una adaptación impulsiva; o bien por el parálisis por análisis. En estos momentos más que nunca es clave saber poner límites. Liderar cada vez requiere más de la improvisación. Pero quienes dominan esta técnica conocen que hay que saber, entrenar y conocerse, para entonces improvisar. Conoce los límites de tu forma.

Consistency in leadership means demonstrating qualities like integrity, empathy, accountability, and effective communication consistently,not just in isolated instances
I have found that one of the best ways to show your boss that you're a leader, is to become a self-reliant problem solver. Take initiative. Take care of things. Take care of those in your charge.
You may want to hold off on taking too much initiative! In my view you show your leadership abilities first, by taking appropriate initiative. Second, have the back of others, including your "boss." By being the example, your light will shine!

Another way to show your boss your leadership skills is to offer to be a mentor for newer or less skilled/experienced colleagues. Mentorship is not only rewarding for the mentee and the organization - it creates opportunities for more senior team members to take on leadership roles and feel a great sense of value, purpose and contribution within the organization. This also allows the organization to ‘try out’ one (or more) of their team members as a leader without committing to a full time leadership role, and this could be a good pitch to your boss as a ‘low risk’ option if you are hoping to move into a more permanent leadership position within an organization.
