What are the most effective ways to show confidence in a Higher Education interview?

Each HE institution recruiter (can be a panel) will expect some specific "SIGNALS" from the applicants. Indeed, each position/program is designed with a particular framework, intending to carve out a distinctive niche, specialization in a field. For any aspiring candidate who would aim to be confident and legitimate for the role, it is important to show a sense of comprehension of the logic of the position/program. It can be showed through RELATED past professional accomplishments, specific degrees, research papers in specific scientific reviews, engagement in associations, all tailored to align with the essence of the program or position.

Researching your perspective institution is especially important when it’s your turn to ask questions during an interview. You should use your research to ask questions beyond the basics. For example, research information on the university strategic plan and ask what the perspective department is doing to help move forward in a particular area of that plan. Being prepared with more thought out questions shows you want to really know about the institution and department to ensure your are a good fit for the job and the job is a good fit for you.

The most helpful thing in showing your expertise in higher education is through industry certification and implementation of ideas through any tool or framework.

Having a thorough knowledge of the institute or college will make you more confident in an interview and more at ease because you would have read enough to understand their expectations from you. Also, not just reading about the place where you are applying, but also having good amount of knowledge of their competitors and the industry as a whole will make you understand the industry standards when you will be negotiating for the salary.

Confidence and its opposites - doubts, scepticism, distrust, or even fear are emotions produced from within. During interviews when functional questions are thrown at a candidate, the recall process is triggered. Recall is a fetching and recognition process where the correct information is chosen from what is available in recaller's mind. Availability of the right information produces this gleeful response that is termed confidence while the lack of the right information produces diffidence, fear and consequent failure. So, proper preparation for interviews is the "antidote" to fear. A candidate must review the JD and thoroughly prepare himself in other to win. With that preparation naturally comes confidence, other things being equal.

Try to always relate your experience and passion to the institution itself. Focus on experiences and lessons that will transfer to another college or university. Think about ways to tailor your answer to the individuals asking the question. For example, if the institution has a significant number of international students, discuss ways you've helped or worked with these students in the past. I would like to add another perspective here: what it means to interview as a Black person with natural hair. This might sound like a detail, but for faculty wearing their hair natural (braids, locks, afro etc…), the question of etiquette and what constitutes a “professional “ hairstyle might be tricky. This is even more complicate when you interview in departments with historically numbers of Black faculty. My advice: go as you are! You might be tempted to cut or relax your hair as to make your interviewers “relax”, but it is a part of you that you are renegading. In its natural state, our hair is professional. It is time for the world to understand that.

It will help you feel more professional. That means shoes, pants/skirt, etc.

Avoid closed-off postures, like crossed arms. Remember to smile genuinely and nod occasionally to show engagement. Your body language can speak volumes about your passion and confidence in the role.

Make the responses impactful by maintaining eye contact, sharing opinions with a polite yet firm voice, and radiating positive energy throughout the interview. Body language suggests so much about each of us as individuals. We may need to portray a much more positive body language and attitude in many situations than we feel in order to gain the confidence that we have or need to move forward.

Often, at the end of interviews, the panel will ask if you have questions for them, or anything that you would like to share that they have not asked about. Be prepared with some targeted, position-and-institution-specific questions to raise. Try to choose questions that portray your serious interest in and consideration of the position and institution, and/or your potentate future colleagues and students. And avoid questions that might be interpreted as confrontational, demanding, persnickety, or entitled. Collegiality is key.

Express your gratitude for the opportunity to interview and reiterate your enthusiasm for the position and the institution. It's also an opportunity to address any points or questions that you might not have fully covered during the interview. Following up demonstrates your commitment and can positively influence their final decision.

Reflect on your own experiences of either being a student or working with students; what were the challenges, what help would have been appreciated? Apply this knowledge to the job you're going for and demonstrate what you will bring to the role that can make a difference to students' outcomes.

Remember, just because you receive a "no" from one institution doesn't mean you won't receive a "yes" from the next. Here are two tips to guide your path: 1) Properly research the institution you're seeking to serve. 2) Study its mission, strategic plan, and recent challenges and successes. If you have correctly conducted your research and shared your understanding of the position and institution in the interview, you will undoubtedly be an applicant for serious consideration. Lastly, be confident in yourself and your talents. An institution is out there waiting for you to serve its mission and students.

It's perfectly okay to say, "I haven't encountered that specific situation" or "I'm unfamiliar with that." Be YOU. Not a muted, overly professional version of you. Every candidate will be highly educated. Every candidate will have a research agenda. Every candidate will have a teaching philosophy. But no other candidate will be YOU. What sets you apart is your true authentic vibe. Academics hope to land positions that they can work through tenure and beyond - which means fit is paramount. Be yourself and if it's "your job" you will secure it!

Know what value you have: - Understand yourself, what drives you and why you are in academia. - There is nothing that can beat authenticity and knowing how that can add value in new university. - You will be more confident in demonstrating your strengths, values and believes and how they can align or enhance or be relevant to the university. - Also take as advantage that your uniqueness might just be what the new place requires. You don’t have to work hard trying to prove how you can fit it, but rather how your uniqueness can add value to the space.

Authenticity is your ace in interviews. Keep it simple: be yourself intentionally. Interviewers can determine the right fit based on genuine personality and sincere presentation.
