What are the most effective ways to select and train TQM leaders?

TQM leaders should have the bird eye view.. to look for the big picture of the organization.. help the team to perform better and organizations achieve their targets.

TQM Leader should have depth knowledge on the following area : -Capability to assess the risk of Quality System and mitigation plan -Highly expertise on Process specific knowledge -Exclusive knowledge on Customer Handling and resolving the complexity - Experienced on Quality Management System tools - Capabilities on People development on Quality System -Adaptation with updated regulatory guidelines and application -Statistical Process and Analytical Capabilities -Problem resolving capabilities -Motivational Strategical Plan -Quality Team Management

Is qualified person who inspires, by appropriate means, sufficient competence to influence a group of individuals to become willing followers in the achievement of organizational goals. Focusing on translating external environment and the internal reality and between those two, and sets together a comprehensive quality improvement program that's going to improve the organization in a way that it meets the needs of their customers and also the employees who work in that organization.

First and foremost the TQM leaders must get in-depth knowledge/training on the TQM principles and the associated tools/methodologies depending on the organization and the specific tools that organization will be using such as 6-sigma, Lean etc. Another important aspect you would want your TQM leaders to be problem solvers and have good ground on decision making, this can be achieved through training and continuous mentorship.

Passion and obsession for quality should be the top criteria. A certain fearlessness is a must for such roles. Of course qualification and experience in quality helps but is not a must.

The most fundamental trait of a TQM leader is being altruistic and growth mindset. They should view self contribution thru eyes of customer success and team's success. They should be able to connect with big picture of organisation leveraging 'system's thinking.'

Few important traits, in my experience are, - obsession with customer satisfaction - facilitating and collaborative leadership style rather than a directive, autocratic style - pragmatic balance between adherence to methods/ frameworks versus focus on desirable outcomes.
