What are the most effective ways to recognize and reward successful leaders?

All it takes sometimes is a simple, thank you! Many people think that reward and recognition is all about money and perks. But it’s much more than Table tennis and free beer on a Friday - it can only get you so far. If you recognise your people and acknowledge the work that they are doing, and the impact that they are having it is far more lasting.

Recognizing leaders involves a spectrum of gestures, from public acclaim to personalized rewards. It includes performance bonuses, professional development, and advancement opportunities. Flexibility, team acknowledgment, and peer accolades also play key roles in this tapestry of appreciation.

Recognizing and rewarding successful leaders is essential for boosting team morale. Effective ways to do so include public recognition in meetings or emails, performance-based bonuses, professional development opportunities, promotions, personalized rewards like gift cards or extra time off, and team celebrations.

Re. rewards. For me, this is where it should - and must, because we are far away from this - get personal. Approaching the person and asking them what would be of most benefit and of value to them - within reason (and possibly with some suggestions to help them mirror to) - is a way to show great appreciation. For each person it will be different. Which is exactly why it will be necessary to ask. Rather than presume that is being offered, will be of the most reward to the receiving leader.

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to reward and recognition. This is why you need to know your team, what drives them, and their values. You can never go wrong with constant feedback, support, and pat on the back, however. People need to hear that they are doing well or that you care enough to correct them and help them grow and improve.

Method of recognition & reward needs to grossly change as per the maturity & hierarchy. At junior & middle Mgt. levels monetary rewards & grade elevation predominates where as at senior levels, nominations to management programs @ renouned institutes & industry level committees works better.

You won't have a leader if you don't encourage excellence. You won't go very high on the swing if someone doesn't push you!

No matter what kind of recognition you want to give your best managers: It has to be honest. And it has to mean something over a long period of time. Younger managers also look at how their older colleagues are treated. If, at some point, highly decorated colleagues are coldly sidelined or dismissed, it quickly becomes clear that today's accolades may be worth nothing tomorrow.

As Managers and leaders you can't help but spend time on the 'sqeaky wheels'. The people that make the most fuss, need the most help, show the most improvement - whatever it is. But do not forget the 20% that don't squeak. They come in day in and day out, reliable, good workers, that you barely have to manage. They deserve appreciation and recognition too!

Make the recognition deserving and louder. Make it presented by the most senior member of the organization/region as much as possible face to face or through video conferencing. As a reward check if they would like to take part in any learning program - short term or long term and sponsor them/support them. Also check if they have any other passion that the organization can support...for example change of role/function/domain within, taking up additional challenges etc.

I think rewards and recognition for leaders can be subjective. It really depends on what their motivations are. In my experience, the successful leaders I know don’t usually aim to get any sort of reward or recognition to boost their personal agendas but rather, it’s for the impact it may have on their business, their people, etc. (For branding and strategy purposes). Also, many successful leaders find joy and contentment in seeing people they’ve led or mentored grow, succeed or transform into leaders as well. Thus, acknowledging their contributions to individuals/teams even in the simplest ways (e.g. personal notes or mentions in various platforms from people they’ve helped one way or another) can be a meaningful recognition already.
