What are the most effective ways to recognize and reward non-monetary contributions and achievements?

In making rewards timely & specific, I have found out that is that it reinforces desired behavior, it increases motivation, it enhances engagement & morale, it greatly improves performance, it encourages goal-setting & progress tracking, strengthens relationships & team dynamics.

In my corporate journey, I have often found myself debating the effectiveness of non-monetary vis-a-vis monetary as well as the effectiveness of various non-monetary mechanisms. To the date, I have not found that one perfect solution - it most definitely varies depending on your audience. So, involving your peers and employees to design this would be the first choice but if I have to pick one thing that seems to work in non-monetary mechanism most times is the peer recognition, a more wider acknowledgement of the great job done, and my personal favorite depending on the level of impact the acknowledgement of contribution in rooms where you don't have the seat but are still being talked about.

There is a need to shift perspective to see recognition as a culture and not just program. This should be the first step of review and improvement. If you ask any employee what recognition means to them the first response would be R&R largely associated to monetary. However if you do a survey despite having robust R&R program you will still find areas of opportunity. Thus is because R&R program recognizes top 10-15% consistent over and beyond performers what about rest 85-90% good performers. By imbibing a culture, we can identify opportunity of recognition may be it be first agenda of Team huddle or celebrating cross training or first hand 5 mins stakeholder meeting recognition for customer excellence etc.

Rewards and recognition is always and has always been the epitome of boosting employee morale in any organisation across..Therefore it is important to regularly revisit your ways of recognition by seeking feedback from employees/leadership and looking for best ways to improve the reward program. In today's digital world with social media taking over and promoting visibility over every aspect of the world's progress, it is equally important to promote one's contribution in the best innovative way for visibility and credibility in any organisation.

I will keep it very simple. - Highlight the achievement by giving an opportunity to share the same through a talk or a case study with actual names. - Brand the individual as an achiever. - Appreciate in public and in meetings. - A certificate of appreciation does work positively. - Encourage , include for future policy making in the concerned department .

I would like to suggest some of the non-monetary options that worked for me: - Appreciating the team members in Townhalls / Team meetings - Sending appreciation emails keeping the team and Leads in loop - Putting top performer names with picture on leaders board (Leader Board to be placed in cafeteria where most of the employees can see it) - Introduce "appreciation badge" and give to your top performers / rookies

Recognition means different for each of us. If our non monetary framework can cater to the different aspects of what motivates, rejuvenates, helps the person feel acknowledged, belonged, valued both as a person, teams and for clearly calling out the value and impact. Diff form of awards to carer to diff needs, career growth, recognition in public, involving family at times as a part of recognition, on sight travel opportunities, calling out the impact of the being, behavior, results, creating visibility for the person with leadership, opportunity to work in special critical projects.Genuine meaningful recognition real-time, substantive actions of care makes it wholesome and impactful. Celebrating the person and their actions, results.

Non- monetary reward is a fairly broad concept and solution for all cannot be cut from a single cloth. However my best bet considering today’s Gen Z workforce will be inclined towards instant gratification using Social media channels and invest in their learning to support them to achieve their future goals.
