What are the most effective ways to manage code as a programmer?

Some things to consider are; 1. Almost always initialize your projects from a VCS repository site like GitHub/GitLab. This ensures from the get go, you’re already thinking about tracking project changes or increments. 2. Plan how you’ll manage your features/branches. For single person projects you might think this isn’t relevant, but it’s still best practice. 3. Don’t forget to commit and push your code! Deciding on when to do this may be a subjective matter, but don’t wait until an entire feature is done before doing so. The whole point of VCS outside collaboration is to ensure incremental changes to a feature or project are tracked.

To mange code effectively in a project, version control tools and software are important. These help in tracking code changes, comparing and merging code branches, and reverting or undoing any changes. GitHub, Subversion, Mercuric and Bitbucket are few examples of such tools.

In my experience version control tools help you to explore your area of creativity and take some risks without having the fear of damaging or sabotaging the actual code which is working fine up till now. Having a good control over version control tools does not only provide you with security and robust features but it also boosts your confidence to try out new features and procedures that might be able to help you increase in your exposure

To manage code effectively, detailed documentation is essential for each API. Version control is important too for tracking code changes, merging to other branches, and reverting if required.

Once, in a hackathon I faced this problem where my team didn't know how to use git (a version control) and it was very difficult managing the code and changes from different devices. Using version control is very essential not only when you are programming in a team, but also when you are a solo programmer. It helps greatly when you go back to the code after a long time by seeing the comments and commits.

For a team, there should be a code formatting cheat sheet! Why ? Every developer/ new joiner knows the guideline of what variable should be named how, and if the team is using camel casing or capital casing with the method naming. How Interface are named? How are we naming constant/static variables? Having a similar naming convention across the entire codebase, make it more readable and understandable. And just like these, many other aspects of formatting should be defined by the Lead/manager to follow across the team.

You don't have to spend extra effort figuring out *how* the code is written before going into *why* it's written. The prettier tool should ideally be a part of the build command, automatically doing its job.

Effective Whitespace: Use whitespace around operators and after commas for clarity.

Documentation is a great way to understand how the codebase is working. Reading 100000 lines of code is inefficient, but visual representation in terms of a diagram, or 50 lines explaining what feature does what and how they are interconnected, what API calls are asynchronous, and why? What Schema, DB we are using ? So, if we find answers for the above WHY in the codebase, forget about the progress!! So, better to document things, and refer to it!!

In my experience. A coder's time is 10% writing code and 75% testing. It is difficult to set up data and a process to run the new code. However the system tester will know if the coder did not spend enough time to run the unit test. A coder with a poor testing reputation soon gets shunted to the boring end of the island!

The test cases developed by testers should be shared with the developers so that they can know the business requirements properly and iterations can be avoided. Most of the developers do manual testing but automation testing should be in their stack. A good tool to start automation testing is cypress.

Code testing is an important aspect of maintaining a code base. Unit testing is the place to begin with. It helps in bringing out any functional changes that might be caused due to a code change. Also using swagger or postman to verify api's can be done. Having automation tests in place could have a greater impact in maintaining a large repo.

There is a difference between premature optimization and writing poor code and over the time you become able to differentiate it.

Code review is a great practice to enhance the quality of a developer. Everyday you make a new mistake, fix that and learn from it. It also clears the misconceptions.

While version control , code reviews and continous integration continously development (cicd) are essential, there is one more important aspect of managing your entire code and project smartly,That is making small user stories, breaking entire epic in small logical segments and then user stories and tasks associated with it. Clubbing code for two or more task and check- in in the group will adds complications . This also makes difficult to perform quick code review and adds challanges in case programmer wants to undone only one of the task checked in from the group.
