What are the most effective ways to make a great first impression on a cold call?

Prior to making contact, invest time in gaining a deep understanding of your potential client. Explore the nuances of their industry, comprehend the dynamics of their company, grasp the intricacies of their role, identify their specific pain points and aspirations, and uncover their personal and professional interests. Armed with this knowledge, you can craft a tailored message and value proposition that resonate with their unique circumstances and requirements. Demonstrating your diligence and preparedness in this way sets you apart from generic outreach and establishes a strong foundation for a meaningful conversation.

As the contributor before me stated, the key is to transform the cold call into a warm call…and customer research is the key to that. Now what is most important in the customer research is that you understand the Leads pain point and open with that. Touch upon their most pressing pain point, validate it with them and tell them you have a solution. They will sit up and listen.

Research your prospects before calling them ? Know what questions to ask and listen actively to the answers ? Learn the common sales objections and how to overcome them ? Researching is certainly the key. Transitioning from cold calling to what can be termed as warm calling is appreciated. It's about shifting the focus from you to the prospect, personalising the call by understanding the buyer's persona, researching their interests, recent activities, and newsworthiness. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn't cut it, just like sending the same bulk email. For success, initiate with a confident and friendly greeting, articulate your purpose, actively listen, and customise your message to address their specific needs or interests. This approach is particularly effective if the buyer holds decision-making authority, expresses genuine interest in your product/service, and has the budget.

Perhaps one of the simplest but most effective measures is to speak honestly. Do not make excuses. Do not blame others for no reason. Accept your shortcomings. Humbly express your strengths. Always remember, we are human beings and every one can easily understands your honesty.

Have an unusual small moment. For example, I am hearing a dog barking, do you have a dog? or I remember this name. Did you go to .... school? (Then they will tell you which school they went.)

If you do your research properly, (as in point 1) you can easily find commonality or context. In other words , is there something you both have in common that will peak their interest as an opener or can you write from a basis of context? Context gives us a platform to springboard into a conversation with, as it’s something that both of you understand, or get, can be excited about or have battled with. Both of these ways would enable you to grab a prospects attention immediately without any tactics or gameplay.

Open with: is this name.surname? So, confirm it. When you get a yes, continue with: "Quick question: at ABC, who is in charge (who handles) of [whatever problem you solve]?

One thing I’ve found helpful when cold calling is doing your research. I’ve learned a lot just from a customer’s website - what they’re about, what products and services they provide. Their mission statement gives insight about their goals and value system. Warm transfers and referrals from mutual connections can also help set you up for success.

I'm passionate about my opening line when making cold calls. "Hi, it's a cold call, but I just need 30 seconds". I believe in starting with honesty and creating a genuine connection within the first 10 seconds of our conversation.

In my opinion, start with a question detecting the needs. For example, what kind of problem do you have with your current copy machines? If they say there is no problem, ask the next question what kind of extra specification would you want if you want to have a new copy machine?

I emphasize the value we bring and the problems we solve rather than mentioning irrelevant details. I ask questions to understand their weak points and how we can help address them.

1)Use “might” like in: “I might be able to send some recommendations your way.” 2) Make your Value Added Proposition very concise: Condense your Value Added Proposition (VAP) to be very concise and can be easily understood in a sentence. Avoid being too vague or providing details. For example saying something like "I might assist with your sales," leaves many questions unanswered. Be more specific by saying, "You could be a great webinar speaker at our online event." 3) Refine how you present your Value Added Proposition If the responses you receive to your VAP are not very enthusiastic - don't rush to change it. Instead, work on refining how you present your value or invest time in developing the communication of your VAP.

Listen carefully but do not show off. Do not repeat what they say and do not agree with them on every point. Serve acceptance and resistance in a balance. They should not question your sincerity.

Pay close attention. Variations in their breathing, pauses during speech, or subtle sounds they emit can offer insights into their level of interest. This awareness is crucial for gauging whether to abbreviate your discussion and switch to email or to persist with the conversation. Additionally, maintain interactivity in the discussion; refrain from monopolizing the call. Allow the recipient to contribute, speak, or respond by posing questions. This ensures a balanced and engaging exchange.

Never insist. Just put an alternative. If they still say no, respect them and thank them for their time. Contact with them (maybe another sales rep.) after a long time.

Expect objections. repeat what you heard. This makes you feel heard. Don’t buy into it - never! Back to your Value Added Proposition Connect the objection with your proposition. “I am not selling you anything - you might be an excellent speaker on our new webinar” In the first encounter don't be too specific in your answer. If you pitch something that is too narrow of a solution, that gives the client an immediate reason to turn you down. You need to be very specific later.

Every cold call comes with an objection, because these are cold calls for a reason and they have never seen or heard of you before. So, give them the opportunity to express their objections first and understand their thought process behind that by listening carefully. Most common ones are usually, 1. They don't know you / trust you 2. They don't know if this will solve their pain point for sure. 3. They are not able to justify the cost with the value. Overcome each one of them as you give them the re-assurance and by doing risk reversal for them, that way they enter the deal with no risk for them and all to gain.

The Close. Asking for the sale is usually the toughest part as they say. But, if you have done the first 5 steps properly, where you have gained their confidence, built a raport, made them trust you and anchored the price to the value they get, reversed the risk on them, then this will be easiest part of all. All you have to ask them is "How soon you want to solve the problem" and "What is their preferred mode of payment". It's really as easy as that, if the first 5 steps are done well.

There will always be times when you won't be able to close with the customer as the timing may not be right for them. In that case, don't force them for the sale, rather, end the conversation on a friendly note and request them to refer any of their friends / family who may benefit of the service. And let them know you will drop your contact info by text / email so they can keep that handy for the future when the timing is right for them. Make sure they are able to remember either you / your name / your company name or something about you that you can add to the SMS / Email so that you can drop that info on the followup message you send them.
