In my experience, the best organizations link team performance to organizational goals by aligning their actions, goals, and decisions with a clear and inspiring vision, rooted in a sense of purpose. Employees want to feel valued and feel like their work matters. When leaders and organizations have clearly defined mission and impact statements, then employees know that they are working towards something important and that their individual contributions can make a difference.

According to me the way an organization has to align the business goals to the team goals and then the teams have to align with individual goals. That is the way the goals to connect everyone in the org to a common strategic objective. Teams are formed basis the classification of activities and tasks which is required to be performed to achieve the overall goal. The major ask is to collaborate, cooperate and synergize. It is important that each team understands the internal customer concept and work towards mutual support to each other. According to me this requires 3 things are required Transparency, Trust and Empathy. Organizations should build in processes and systems to get teams engage and involve in the process of goal setting.

Clear communication of organizational goals is essential to establishing linkage. Employees are well versed in the importance of financial goals and targets. They've lived with them and have felt the brunt of failing to achieve them from time immemorial. They are less familiar with non-financial goals which have proliferated in the wake of the ESG movement. In this environment it is incumbent on leadership to help employees understand the relative importance of these objectives, how they and their teams can influence these non-financial outcomes and if/how they will be held accountable for achieving them. Garnering and sharing the evidence on the business value of achieving these goals can enhance the credibility of leadership's assertions.

Align Team goals with the organizational strategic goals. Most importantly, explain the "why" behind the goals and connect how important the team performance is to success.

If the Goals are aligned , team is going to work in uniform direction to attain Organisation objective. This benefits mutual interest.

When there is clear alignment up, down and across the organization about the ultimate goals, managers and employees are clear on their goals, roles and processes. There is a clear line of sight to how what I do advances the organization as a whole.

In my opinion, aligning with higher level strategy, vision and mission, organisational goals are defined and made available to all employees but they find it very difficult to correlate it to their day to day job. The reason being, leadership designs holistic organisational level goals so that those are comprehensive enough to appeal each one in the organisation. Hence Managers have to play a pivotal role in establishing correlation between each organisational goal and his/her team’s goals by mapping day to day activities to goals. For example, if higher level goal is “Customer Satisfaction” explain it to the team members that even if they are not in customer facing roles, how everyone is indirectly facing customers ultimately.

While it takes a bit more time, make sure you set your team goals in a way that clearly outlines how they support the department level or company level goals. When teams understand how they contribute to the bigger picture they tend to stay more engaged and get more done, faster.

Constant feedback is also very helpful. It enables us to know whether we are still aligned to organizational goals, or we've diverted. Team goals must be well clarified and simple to understand.

Sometimes different functions have contradictory goals. A common example is "Sales team to get the business, and they overpromise to earn the lead because of the target pressure. On the other hand, Service Team or Quality Team has the target of Customer Satisfaction ". Two departments look like working against each other. These kinds of conflicting goals should be aligned towards one outcome. Another way is to let each function head come together to create goals aligned with the vision & and mission of the organization so that everyone has co-created and co-shared goals to achieve.

A sure-shot way to link team performance to organizational goals is the Bottom-up approach, as against the tried, tested and validated Top-down approach. Let the individuals in a function (department) be a party to the formation of the FSC (Functional Score Card) rather than restrict their involvement to the formation of their ISC (Individual Score Card). In doing so the individual (whatsoever his position might be in the departmental hierarchy) gets an opportunity to bring in some ground-level realities for the senior / top team to mull over.

I would suggest tying variable compensation to the successful and timely completion of these goals. Giving your employee an opportunity to affect their variable income can have dramatic results in performance and job satisfaction.

The spans of control, accountability, influence and support should be adjusted appropriately,depending on the strategy. Understand which technique is better for the organization or business is key. However, unacceptable behaviors must be clarified to counter the internal pressures created by these tensions.
