I've been on both sides of that, grantor and recipient, and government grants can be a lot like heroin, briefly stimulating but leading to bad choices and debilitation. Grants often fund what the business doesn't need and force changes/priorities of the grantor that bloat administrative, auditing, staffing, buildings, and political lobbying costs greatly as well as consuming a lot of time. The most productive uses have been to offset some of the real, but unrecognized by most accounting systems, cost of training and upskilling employees...as long as you don't rely on higher education to do the training this is a win-win for everyone usually. The other good use is for public infrastructure to the business site.

Define the project idea and, really important, the list of costs you need to allocate to develop that idea. Most part of grants allows you to receive funding just for some costs category. Start your plan really in advance, since every grant applications may require months to be evaluated.

Do not apply to really ambitious programs, if your company/idea does not have the requirements to be funded. Generally speaking, large research grants are managed thorugh framework R&D programma of the European Commission, while grants supporting companies startup are managed by local governement bodies.

Carefully read the call text, the workprogramme and the guide for proposers: you may find these documents in the information package usually provided by the granting body. Start preparing your application really in advance, so to be sure to write an high quality document. Consider all related annexes that may be required. And...carefully watch at the deadline timing: usually grants can only be submitted within a strict deadline.
