What are the most effective ways to help your mentee meet their deadlines?

Using SMART goals or another goal-setting method will ensure you are breaking up your vision and setting accountability. It also gives you a vision of where there may have been gaps within your plan.

1. Establish Clear Goals and Priorities: Work with your mentee to set clear and achievable goals. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. 2. Create a Realistic Timeline: Collaboratively create a realistic timeline for completing tasks and projects. Factor in any potential obstacles or delays. 3. Encourage Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-in meetings to review progress and address any challenges or roadblocks.

SMART goals are always good for breaking plans into bite-sized pieces. However, it has been solicited so much as a one-size-fits-all solution that most people roll their eyes and look no further for ways to approach their problems. To make SMART more effective, we have to consider it in the context of everyone's SPACE: social contexts, physiological reactions, actions, cognitions, and consider their emotions. This approach fulfills the purpose of making people more effective with SMART. Reframing this a bit: SMART puts problems into boxes and tells us where to go. SPACE helps us handle the conditions in and around us so that while on the go, we remain functional and effective. These considerations help to keep goals in sight and on time.

Set a quarterly goal setting cadence and regular weekly check-ins for updates .OKRs I’ve found to be more aspirational, while SMART goals tend to be tactical. I also always encourage them to revisit the value of a task if they find themselves rescheduling it more than once or twice; sometimes it's not as important as it seemed.

It’s normal that people start something new with enthusiasm and then with time they gave up. What I do is to evaluate the best way of completing the tasks, checking the environment, testing different times to see which one is more productive, keep changing the way of doing it as it starts to get boring, and most important: set the right motivation as it will be a gamer chance. Before all of it, it’s important that your mentee trust in those people. And for that to happen, they need trust on themselves first. If they are afraid of open up and be judge, you can give good techniques and it won’t work for long time run. If you teach them that they are worth, showing it to them effectively not just words, they will understand that doesn’t really matter what the other people think about them, it won’t affect who they are and they will be stronger. When it happens, the respect grows and people start to want their opinions on projects etc, as they will be very honest and useful.

I believe all of it is required, yes, but also a very good guidance will be fundamental. When people talk about themselves, sometimes they can get very hard on their own judgments. It’s important here to show how good they are and capable. I love to take the points they believe they are bad and show them that actually, they are a very strong points, they just need to redirect it to another area. Example when people believe they are anger, aggressive. It can be really good if they focus that energy in projects to grow and improvements.

Encourage your mentees to work back from the end. If they can't see the end clearly, it may be hard to make a plan to get there. Then work back to those small first steps. What will they do tomorrow, by next week, by next month. If getting started is a problem, even committing to spending five minutes on a task or problem can be enough to overcome the inertia.
