Reedit, proofread and grammar check. Read it multiple times to understand what parts have to be worked upon and omitted. Check the tone, rhythm, style and context of the text and you can get additional help for reviewing too.

I prefer to do following. 1) Let it rest for 30 minutes 2) Read it once again - from the beginning till end. 3) Mark everything, which seems suspicious / off / strange 4) Check the data - they must be up to date, correct and important for the text itself 5) Ask colleague of yours to listen 6) Make the final corrections of the text

The longer you can make the gap between drafting and editing, the better. At an absolute minimum you want to leave it overnight before you take another look at it, but coming back to your work with a fresh pair of eyes after the weekend or a couple of days is ideal.

It’s always good to take breaks. You come back to the manuscript with a fresh perspective. You are able to look at the documents from different angels. Also, you see errors you missed.

I almost always take a pause between a draft or drafts and a revise or final version. This gives me the opportunity and time to return to copy with fresh eyes. Do a second careful reading where i mark up any errors i identify and leave comments and suggestions for the author. As much as possible, editors must try not to take out the voice of the author from the copy or over edit the copy. If it is right gramatically but is not how you would have written it, you should leave it be.
