What are the most effective ways to develop your soft skills and get promoted?

The classic method of approaching strangers is very underappreciated. I think it still works! When you talk to random people, you get exposed to a lot of different sentiments and psyches. It helps you develop a sense of talking which is reflective of increased confidence, increased politeness, and most importantly increased understanding. These traits truly help in communicating effectively and getting promoted.

Assessing strengths and weaknesses has been my go-to for developing soft skills and aiming for a promotion. It's like using a mirror for my professional self, helping me focus on what needs improvement. I disagree with the idea that admitting weaknesses is a setback – it's actually a smart move for self-improvement. An example I've seen is a colleague who rocked project management but struggled with communication. They tackled it head-on with workshops, boosting their skills and landing a well-deserved promotion.

Firstly you need to look at what skills are need to get promoted. Don't spend time learning this that are not going to help you attain the goal. Then categorise the most important skills you would need. Then rate your skills and find where you are strong and where you are weak. Then focus on the areas that you are weak but have a high importance to the new role. This should have the largest gain, giving you the best return on time invested.

Focua on what you are good at and be aware of the things you are not good at. Seek feedback and be honest about what you know about your strenghts and weaksnesses

The first thing to do is go on your phone, and look at your digital balance (how long you spend on each app) This is usually an easy way to save hours a week. especially for young people. I have done this with colleagues and they have 15 hours a week on social media. If you half this time you could free up 7-8 hours a week to study and improve your skills. Then make sure your goals are: Make sure your goals are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Then focus on the areas that you are weak but have a high importance to the new role. This should have the largest gain, giving you the best return on time invested.

Perfection in action, reaction and interaction in the doing of life is the best way to hone your soft skills. Love and respect people. Value what you do. Put in your best. That's the only way to remain in the best mental frame in order to ace all interactions. This is it.

Asking for feedback is critical to everyone's career journey including economists. Growing your career requires feedback from your colleagues about your hard and soft skills. If you can identify a mentor within your organization who is outside of your reporting structure, that will also provide you with additional feedback on areas of focus. Feedback can sometimes have a negative connotation, however career feedback in my opinion is also useful information that helps you decide what are the next tangible steps to take in your career and it can highlight your successes as well. Many economists are technical, and I believe soft skills such as communication are highly valuable, serving as a goal for the profession as a whole.

Feedback is worth its weight in gold — and it's usually as simple to get as asking. Part of the key to successfully implementing it though is legitimately paying attention to and taking feedback constructively and not personally. The moment you ask, taking on an economic and analytical mindset to deeply listen and understand can be extremely helpful. Be sure to sincerely thank anyone who is willing to give feedback!
