The "official" way to communicate career goals to the bosses would be via the performance appraisal. Being a member of the management, I do not think that we should wait for the appraisal to do so. This can be communicated informally: over a meal, a drink, or during a "pantry chat". If we need to wait for a formal event to share this, it would make the relationship feel distant. I would like to hear the same from my boss and speak openly about how we can help each other to achieve our goals. We should be having an informal relationship outside work - not necessarily the best of mates but friends for a start. After this, we can identify suitable training, career options, and opportunities to work towards our respective goals.
