What are the most effective ways to communicate the impact of substance abuse on families and communities?

Tackle The Why's One thing I've found helpful is understanding the why. Why do people abuse substances? Addressing the why's and providing solutions or options that tackle these whys is a broader and more productive approach. Secondly, seeing is believing. Show them the physical and mental effects of substance abuse on the body. You can do this through testimonials of addicts who are sober now, real-life documentaries, etc. Please note that for this to work, the testimonials/documentaries have to be relatable i.e. They should come from people who are similar to them in age, race, class, sex, religion, etc.

Examples where a speech is tailored for a specific audience. "The Cost of Doing Nothing" - Geared towards top management and CEO's. This speech details the financial cost to companies who do not acknowledge or fail to address substance use disorder prevention, care and treatment for employees and family members. The speech gives hard financial facts on how addiction causes missed work days, accidents, poor retention of staff, poor morale and loss of training dollars. It educates on the disease model, how to assist employees and their families It seeks to help managers identify warning signs of drug use. The goal is to help those at the top of management structure gain empathy and see value in supporting recovery.

To effectively communicate the impact of substance abuse on families and communities, use personal stories, statistics, visual media, workshops, public awareness campaigns, collaboration with experts, community engagement, art, public speaking, online platforms, school programs, policy advocacy, partnerships, support groups, and research publications. A multifaceted approach is key for broader understanding and awareness.

Meeting clients where they are in theoretical change model, and discuss family roles as they relate to dysfunction and addiction. We must also address biopsychosocial approach as it relates to individuals and communities. When utilizing the theoretical change model and the biopsychosocial approach it is then as a clinician you can provide knowledge and support in the process of trauma-informed care to individual and communities.

In my journey of communication, I've come to realize that authenticity is paramount. Families are looking for answers to their "why" questions. Helping them navigate the disease of substance abuse their loved one suffers from, from a psychoeducation perspective, can help answer some of the "why" questions and begin a path to healing as well.

Substance overuse is a natural way of life for so many. Today, one in five people struggle with alcoholism. One in four have experienced a mental illness, especially after the age of forty. The specific impact in this missive is ‘overdosing’. I overdosed with booze/ pills thousands of times. Make no mistake, passing out and fade to black is one’s body shutting off. (Different substances - not an opioid). I have been sober for a dozen years. In 2011, people who struggled with addiction - 5/10 were alcoholics, 5/10 were addicts. Today, the ratio is 7/3, maybe even 8/2 addict. And WE are younger. The maturity level of the person has been overrun with ACEs, and unhealed traumas. Men and women. Scientific efficacy or a compelling discussion?

Tell stories with concept of “everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have available “ Addiction is not a moral issue, it is people using the tools that are culturally acceptable and oftentimes enforced to cope with difficult life circumstances. People may start to fulfil their need to belong in their culture and then due to circumstance and genetic factors may have a more difficult time knowing how to stop. The substance fills a purpose in someone’s life and when we ask the right questions with genuine curiosity sobriety is more attainable . Self awareness followed by harm reduction of introducing an instead for the intended impact allows people to make an informed choice and get the required results in a safer manner.

As a clinician when you're building rapport with individuals and communities it is imperative that you provide some self-disclosure as it relates to the topic and benefits the individuals and the community in seeing you as an ally.

For instance, I once talked about a friend who had struggled with substance abuse for a long time. Sharing this story helped others in the audience relate to the challenges and the hope of recovery. I also mentioned a small community that did something to reduce substance abuse in their area. This showed how working together can make a big difference. So, sharing these kinds of stories and examples can make it easier for people to see how substance abuse impacts real lives and how positive changes are possible.

Use age-appropriate stories and examples to help them understand the potential effects on their future.

In my experience, inviting feedback and participation is essential when discussing the impact of substance abuse. It helps create a safe space for open conversations, encourages diverse perspectives, and showcases success stories, making our discussions more meaningful and inspiring.

I have been offering talks about Alcohol abuse and its impact on families and communities to my peers since 1996. Some of the comments from attendees - "I didn't realise how alcohol abuse affects the rest of the family". If anyone is interested, I can show them the actual text of all the comments. In 1996, I wrote an article which was published in the South African Medical Journal about how the treatment of alcoholics is prioritised by rehab centres and the family is not offered the same level of support. Things have changed - an example the 'Cedars Rehab Centre' in both KZN and the Western Cape in South Africa offer an intensive programme for Families of Alcoholics. I also find Darlene Lancer's approach to co-dependency very helpful.
