What are the most effective ways to build a freelance practice in Information Architecture?

As an IA consultant, I was drawn to the challenge of creating user-centered information structures that would enhance the overall user experience of websites and applications. Initially, I tried to be a jack-of-all-trades, taking on projects ranging from e-commerce websites to enterprise applications. While this approach allowed me to gain exposure to different industries and challenges, it also left me feeling overwhelmed and lacking a clear focus. Then, I realized that defining my niche was crucial for success in the competitive freelance market. I had a natural inclination towards designing user-friendly interfaces for B2C websites. My passion for these areas aligned with my strengths in visual design and user empathy.

This part is essential, but can be time consuming, and in general requires that you learn both written and verbal communication skills, both hard (knowing how to get the best out of your tools) and soft (knowing how to present information in an engaging way). If you are more of a writer, you should consider starting a newsletter (I personally use Substack for my content). If you are more extroverted, go for podcasts and video presentations, or even live lessons. The one thing to remember is that this process can take time, sometimes two to three years, to get your name and brand out there, so factor this into your timeline as you transition to an influencer.

I have learned that I cannot always be available at all times, and I need to be able to say no to projects that I am not able to take on. I need to be able to clearly explain my approach and I need to be able to listen to their feedback. I have found that tracking my time, budget, and progress is also essential. This helps me to identify where I am wasting time and money, and it helps me to make sure that I am on track to meet my deadlines.

The very deep confusion that exists between the understanding what information is against playing with "data" is the major issue. Data only exists if there is a contextual reason for being there. No exception... Understand the why before playing with the what... Start thinking before doing:-)
