What are the most effective ways to avoid hiring the wrong candidate?

Once a candidates was late, did not call to tell us and was not hired. He wasn't hired because he was late with a no call. He had a great personality, great experience and did well interviewing. As the VP of Talent, it is my responsibility to ensure the candidate experience is top-tier. I gave him honest feedback, as I do with all of our candidates and told him why he was not selected. He responded with an apology and said this was the third interview he was late for in the last two weeks. He didn't have a late problem he had a video game addiction. I asked him what was more important- he knew the answer. He emailed me a week later to thank me for getting a job at another company. Lead from the front always.

I think the most important thing is to define what you are actually hiring for (e.g. competencies, job skills). Then, ensure you keep coming back to these criteria in your decision-making. In my experience, the wrong person is often hired as a result of straying from the core hiring need and allowing biases to influence the decision.

My experience is simple is always better. These are the steps I usually follow. 1. Pick the resumes that likely suits your needs. A resume not necessarily says everything. 2. An initial interview to assess which projects does that candidate align with. 3. Give an assignment in relevant area to gauge the candidate’s effort, way of thinking, and basic skills. 4. Ask to present/demo their assignment / previous works incase 3 doesn’t apply.

Por isso, é muito relevante descobrir o fit cultural e o conjunto de valores do candidato, ainda mais até do que definir que conhecimentos ele precisa trazer. Startups precisam de pessoas capazes de fazer acontecer, de aprender coisas novas a cada instante, a colaborar e n?o de um extenso currículo. Muitas vezes profissionais tarimbados vem do mercado e n?o se adaptam a esses ambientes mais flexíveis e ágeis. Por isso, defina bem suas necessidades principalmente no sentido de valores e comportamentos requeridos.

Selon mon expérience l'adaptabilité et l'intégrité sont deux compétences primordiales pour pouvoir intégrer une start-up. Au-delà des expériences, c'est surtout le mind-set qui est important lorsqu'on rejoint une start-up.

Muitas pessoas ainda s?o acostumadas ao modo antigo e é um processo gradual até que todos se desloquem para os sites de vagas.

Key is to leverage your network in the broadest sense so you find people who might not apply or know about your roles. Also to look internally at strong candidates who might enjoy a move - better to keep them in your organisation than them leave for competitors.

In my experience the key to finding the right person for your role is to widen your search to include everybody IN THE WHOLE MARKET, including those 80% of qualified candidates who aren’t actively looking, as opposed to restricting your search to those applicants who happen to be ON THE MARKET.

I disagree with the advice to not rely strictly on a recruiter. It really does depend on the recruiter and how much time you have to sift through potential candidates. A good recruiter will use a broad range of sources and methods which casts a wide net and then through screening and assessment will narrow down to those who closely fit the job requirements and culture, and even present a candidate or two who may not be the right fit "on paper" but have characteristics, abilities or attitude that make them hidden gems. Caveat: If you're working with a recruiter who's strictly dependent upon their database and network, then stick with the original advice if you have the time and energy to do the work required to use multiple sources.

How do you avoid hiring the wrong person? Avoid screening for & evaluating the wrong skills! Great TA partners help hiring managers to define/refine the core competencies needed for a role, then figure out how to best test for these in a process. Some low-hanging fruit: - ask specific, relevant, highly-focused questions (“We are struggling to do X with Y. Have you done this or something similar? How?”) - ensure take homes & cases are representative of the actual job (if the person’s job is to build models, have them build or fix a model) - be brutally honest about the environment the candidate will do the job in. Don’t sugar coat or try to hide any chaos… you want them to know what they’re walking into and be able to weather it.

Utilizing behavioral and other predictive assessments to dig deeper into the candidate, and how they may fit into your organization and the role.

The best way is only skill test which help us know if the candidate is suitable or not and if they don't fit in skills needed for a position then better to not proceed after taking skill test.

After 2 start-ups, I realised that the first few employees are the hardest. I typically would need to see their work experience and portfolios. Tip: And I would deal with 3 rounds of interviews to see how fast they are also taken off the market. If the skills are generic, I would use an agency to work on it until the company is stable, as the cost of retainer is lesser than a full timer and its less disruptive while the business gets a hold.

You need to matrix out yourself and the rest of your team. The worst hires are the clones of other people on the team. If you cannot matrix out your team to fill in all the necessary skills/talents/personalities needed to build something successful you cannot hire properly.

By the time you reach the interview stage, you should have a solid understanding of what success looks like in this role and how to screen candidates for it. It's also crucial to be transparent and honest about what the job entails and what the company can offer. Avoid overselling the company culture or growth opportunities that don't align with reality. It's not just about evaluating a candidate's skills and competencies, but also giving them a clear picture of what to expect, both positive and negative, so they can make an informed decision about whether to accept the job.

Skills are important but not enough to label any hired candidate as wrong. Any such gap can usually be filled as long as candidate has learning aptitude. Only case when this has been issue is when candidate cheated during interviews. Make sure video/in-person interviews are not substituted by audio-only. In my experience, ‘Character of the person’ is most probable reason why hired candidates are perceived wrong. Frame the interview questions to weed out. Other reason is ‘Motivation’. It’s paramount to find why candidate is leaving and more importantly why they are interested to join this one. If there are wrong motivations, they may leave soon after joining or worse, they will stay and won’t be interested in giving their full.

Key is to do your homework on the candidate. Don’t turn up having not read their cv or profile on LinkedIn. Due diligence is key so check your network also.

Totally incorrect...why would u trust the opinions of strangers u've never met & have no intention of hiring over someone u've spent multiple meetings w/& has gotten the thumbs up across your org?References should be used as an opportunity to learn best how to support this new hire & make them successful. Questions like; how can I make them successful here? Where can I support them in their first few months? The feedback for the candidate should be solicited in an organized fashion DURING the process not at the end. Old feedback is meaningless feedback,anyone involved in the interview should be submitting their feedback within 24 hours of the meeting. If you cannot trust yourself & your team to hire then you shouldn't be a hiring manager.

I think that reference checking based on calling the former boss is out of line. Who knows if the boss was toxic and will say the wrong things about the employee. Ask for the potential employee if he or she can give their references or just simply check their LinkedIn.

Be transparent about the role, culture, challenges and everything that the candidate would like to know. Set clear expectations from the start to sieve out the wrong fit. Better to restart the search process than to hire the wrong person.

I also would look for former start-ups founders, these group of talents been through the learning curve, and some are potentially looking for a salaried, stable income before they get back on the invention mode again!

Self-awareness is one of the greatest foundations for hiring the right people. This means that the founder or founding team, especially the CEO, has a clear sense of the true values that are at the core of the business, the true mission, and what it's really like to work with you and the existing team. A larger company has buffers but at 25 or fewer people, the CEO really does set the tone. Still true in a much larger company but especially at this size. Transparent feedback with no fear of retribution is of great value. Hire with eyes wide open, not for where you'll be in a year but where you are now. It's possible, and ideal, to hire for the trajectory, but this takes skill developed over time. (Rely on mentor or seasoned recruiter.)

Think outside the box. Don’t just hire like for like or identical people to what you have. Leverage on diversity in the broadest sense especially if you’re talking to clients the more varied talent the better
