1 Types of social influence

There are three main types of social influence that you can use in the workplace: conformity, compliance, and obedience. Conformity is the tendency to align your behavior or opinions with those of a group or a norm, either explicitly or implicitly. Compliance is the act of agreeing to a request or a demand from someone who has some form of authority or power over you. Obedience is the extreme form of compliance, where you follow the orders or commands of someone who has legitimate or coercive authority over you.

Obedience is not really the output of social influence. To obey doesn't need any kind of agreement, but just fear of the power you have. Influence is the art of getting to know others, discover their needs, values and goals and be able to link your or your company needs to those of your team. Influence is not a "one shot" act, is a process which is above 80% based on empathy and truly knowing others.

2 Principles of persuasion

The six principles of persuasion, developed by Robert Cialdini, a renowned psychologist and author, are widely used models of social influence. These principles are based on decades of research on how people respond to various stimuli and cues that influence their decision-making. For instance, people tend to return favors or repay debts that others have done for them (Reciprocity), value things more when they are rare or limited (Scarcity), trust and follow experts or credible sources of information (Authority), act in ways that are consistent with their previous commitments or statements (Consistency), like and agree with those who are similar to them, who compliment them, or who cooperate with them (Liking), and follow the majority or the crowd, especially when they are uncertain or unsure (Consensus).

Usually there's not just one of those six principles working alone. Persuasion is a mix of: - Trust - Competence (being competent) - Mastering listening - Vulnerability (don't be afraid of showing you need something to be done and you need people to adhere to your thoughts and needs.

3 Applications in the workplace

Applying principles of persuasion can be beneficial in various workplace contexts, such as negotiating, selling, leading, and influencing. When negotiating, you can use reciprocity, scarcity, and authority to create value and leverage, while using consistency, liking, and consensus to build rapport and trust with counterparts. When selling, scarcity, authority, and consensus can increase the perceived value and credibility of your product or service. Additionally, reciprocity, consistency, and liking can generate interest and loyalty among customers or clients. As for leading, you can use authority, consistency, and consensus to establish your vision and direction; while reciprocity, scarcity, and liking can motivate and inspire team members or followers. Lastly, you can use any combination of these principles to persuade or convince others to adopt your ideas or opinions depending on the situation and audience.

The principles of persuasion are powerful and effective, but they should be used wisely and responsibly. When applying social influence in the workplace, it's important to be authentic and genuine, relevant and appropriate, and flexible and adaptable. Don't use these principles to deceive or trick others, or to force or coerce them. Make sure your intentions and motives are transparent and respect the autonomy of others. Additionally, only use these principles when they are relevant to the situation and context, and when they match the needs and preferences of others. Finally, be open to feedback and criticism, and willing to adjust your approach or strategy depending on the results.

We always need to be authentic and genuine. I think that when we are honest and consequential with our values we can achieve better result and for a longer time. And of course, that apply also when we are using principles of persuasion which can be really powerful if we know how and when to use each of them.

People who put on masks to hide their true self will find it harder and harder to maintain the act as time goes on. Not only do they have to remember the lies they've told everyone but deep down, they know they can't lie to themselves. It is much better to be honest about yourself to others. Your interactions are more authentic which lets you better connect with your colleagues. There will be aspects about you that people won't like but that's normal and you either learn to ignore them or improve yourself from within

Building your impact and influence among stakeholders takes time and the courage to role model the behaviour you want to see and nurture. Using a powerful role or job title in an organisation will only take you so far in getting what you want. Leading with fear and expecting obedience in return will lead to failure in the longer term and will ultimately tarnish your reputation. Being genuine in wanting your stakeholders to progress, as you progress, is key. It won’t happen overnight and it takes work.
