1 Choosing the right datums

When selecting datums, it's important to consider their stability, rigidity, accessibility, and relevance to the part or assembly. For instance, planes, holes, shafts, external surfaces, edges, mating surfaces, and interfaces are all ideal choices for datums. Additionally, try to minimize the number of degrees of freedom of the part by selecting three mutually perpendicular planes. This will help simplify the GD&T scheme and prevent ambiguity and errors.

It is purposely help us to prevent ambiguity and errors, therefore, it is worth noting where to apply such. and datum would be a ideal choice to apply that, this include, planes, edges, mating, surfaces, external surface, holes, shafts and some others.

2 Applying the correct modifiers

Modifiers are symbols that modify the tolerance or datum reference of a feature, allowing for optimization of the GD&T scheme and ensuring the functional performance of the part or assembly. When a feature's size affects its fit or function, such as a hole or a pin, you should use the maximum material condition (MMC) modifier. On the other hand, if size affects clearance or assembly, such as a slot or a tab, you should use the least material condition (LMC) modifier. The regardless of feature size (RFS) modifier should be used when size does not affect fit or function, such as with surface finish or profile. The projected tolerance zone (PTZ) modifier is necessary when tolerance extends beyond the surface, like in a threaded hole or stud. Finally, statistical tolerance (ST) modifier is used when tolerance is based on statistical analysis, like with six sigma process or Cpk value.
