The calibration should consider benchmarking all the parameters measured by the metering station against those measure by master measuring devices. For example, flow meters measurements can be calibrated against readout from meter provers. A meter prover is a mannual or automated apparatus used to calibrate the measurements obtained from oil or gas flow meters. The discrepancy between the flow meater measurements and the flow prover readings can then be taken as indicator of the flow meater accuracy. The master meter provers are the type of flow provers by which the calibration can be done directly (at the pipeline site) or indirectly (remote).

The design and installation of equipment for a pipeline metering station for Natural Gas should be done carefully with respect to industrial standards and safety considerations. The metering station or skid usually includes orifice plates, sensors for temperature and pressure, sensors for points to detect the moisture content and gas chromatograph. Hand Operated valves and shutdown valves must also be incorporated. The High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) is also necessary to safeguard the pipeline incase of over-pressure. These sensors are routed to a centralized system consisting of DP meters and other transmitters which transmit data to the flow computer to analyze flow rates.
