For me the first thing to remember is that the person you are reaching out to is a human first and foremost. They may have a more senior role than you, but they are still human. Be polite, be considerate and be yourself. I get many connection requests that start with an apology, which instantly puts me on edge, do you want to connect with me or are you sorry for taking up my time? Next up is why you want to connect with me, and if it’s to sell to me then find another reason. Your product / service that is going to change my life is not going to start it off well, before you go there, a phrase that we use a lot is show me that you know me….what is my experience, what industry am I in, what experience do you have that adds value to me.

For me, this will be heavily dependent on the persons involved and the reason to connect. As a naturally quiet person with a dominant-introverted trait, I do not enjoy random convos or just-in-case networking. There has to be a clear purpose. So for people like me, I'll recommend an intentional and a very direct networking approach. Reach out to someone in a higher position who you feel will add value to you. Ask for a coffee chat or brunch (on your tab), or ask for a quick meeting with clear reasons for requesting a connect. Also, focus more on reaching out to people with shared interests and value to make the process less forced. For people like us, the convo and synergy must flow quite naturally to even have us consider it.

Isso depende da situa??o. Nem sempre será possível estabelecer estes parametros antes de contatar a pessoa. Certa vez, no intervalo da pós gradua??o a oportunidade de falar com um contato em potencial apareceu e eu o abordei usando aquilo que, na minha experiência, nunca falhou: SER INTERESSADO. Eu conhecia alguns fatos sobre a empresa da pessoa e, educadamente, o abordei comentando sobre uma reportagem que havia saído sobre o assunto por aqueles dias. A conversa fluiu e a conex?o permanece até hoje.
