One that I've tried is Random initialization. You initialize the weights and biases of an ANN, randomly by selecting samples from a uniform/normal distribution with a small standard deviation. Advantage is, it introduces randomness thus preventing from learning the same characteristics. Drawback is that if the numbers are either little or too big, it might produce gradient descent difficulties. Under vanishing gradient, gradients that are used to update the network become extremely small or "vanish" as they are backpropagated from the output layers to the earlier layers, thus converging to a non-optimal solution, ie won't pick small insights. Exploding gradient may lead to returning NaN values with heavy weights that are not updatable.
