For applications in the cloud efficiency is also important, it is not just about ensuring the application meets the KPI at load but also does it do this cost-effectively by using the resources sparingly. In addition cloud mechanism like auto-scaling should be tested to ensure they work as expected.

The next step is to design the test scenarios and data that will simulate the real-world conditions and behavior of your cloud solution. You need to select the most relevant and realistic scenarios that cover the critical and common functionalities and features of your cloud solution, such as user actions, transactions, workflows, and events. You also need to prepare the test data that will support the test scenarios, such as user profiles, input parameters, output values, and error messages. Moreover, you need to determine the test parameters that will control the execution of the test scenarios, such as the number of concurrent users, the duration of the test, the ramp-up and ramp-down rates, and the distribution of the load.

Arguably, one of the reasons to be on the cloud is the ability to scale up and down for performance. Designing a system for testing performace can similarly be easy on a cloud infrastructure. Anecdotally, in my experience, cloud infrastructures tend to be overprovisioned, not under provisioned. For "right-sizing" and for ongoing performance and functional testing, I would: 1 - Create a QA infrastructure than can be part of a devops pipeline so that it can be stood up and torn down on demand. 2 - Run functions tests, then security and performance tests for estimated peak + percentage as well as low performance times. 3 - Run performace tests for every major change.

Some applications are network latency-sensitive and therefore this may need to be considered in the scenario. For example make sure you have test generators in the same geo-specific places as your users or emulate this in the testing. You don't need to generate all your load from remote location but you do need to under stand the real user experience for users in remote places.

You need to select the test tools that are compatible with your cloud solution, that support your test scenarios and data, and that provide the features and functionalities that you need, such as scripting, recording, monitoring, reporting, and analysis. You also need to configure the test environment that will host your cloud solution and your test tools, and that will emulate the production environment as closely as possible. Furthermore, you need to ensure that your test tools and environment are secure, scalable, elastic, and cost-effective.

One thing to consider is the skill base of your test team. If they have a development background they may be happier with more code-based test tools while if they are moving over from a functional testing background then they may work better with a GUI-based tool.

Don't forget to make sure you check that the system is responding correctly. Make sure your test scripts check that the correct response is returned and reports errors. Then, make sure you get a low error count during a test to give you confidence in the test.
