What is the most effective way to ask for feedback on your safety performance?

Needing feedback is a given. How one does that can frequently depend upon the size of your business and then, upon whether you are seeking feedback on your local performance or more widely, on your corporate feedback. For many staff, corporate feedback is meaning less. Corporate isn't going to harm them, whereas their local hazards and risks, combined with local failure to manage those risks will hurt them. In short, you need to use every tool available to you to gain as much feedback as possible. If your workers see you attempting to engage, they in turn might engage with you. If they see you do nothing, don't be surprised if they do nothing in return.

When seeking feedback on safety, it's crucial to create an environment that encourages open communication. For example, instead of asking, "Is everything okay?" we could ask, "Can you share your thoughts on the safety measures we have in place?" From my experience, open communication is one of the most important things regarding safety. There can be dangerous situations when safety feedback is too late. So it is critical that all involved parties feel free to communicate and use the stop-working policy.

It’s hard to be successful in safety profession working in a role of lonely warriors pushing everyone to work safely. Excellence requires genuine interest of our “customers”, it’s absolutely critical to understand the demand of all parties involved at every step of our work. We need to understand the needs of business leaders before we come up with any proposals. Leaders should be willing to invest in safety. There should be more than just feedback from management- it’s a constant cooperation, with feedback and negotiations at every step of our work. The same with personnel - they should be happy that new safety initiatives appear. We need to listen to their struggles, explain required changes and make experience with safety positive.
