What are the most effective transportation technologies for promoting economic development in urban areas?

To start with, "promoting economic development" in 2024 is a very strange goal to put forth, given the all-negative contribution of "economy" to endangering the very continuation of life. I shall then contribute by commenting any positive contribution to mobility in urban areas, putting on top solutions to free urban areas from the automotive nuisance. To this respect, AV are but an evolution of BAU with some features added in order to maintain the automotive market to a financially acceptable level, but no contribution to the urgently requested automotive reduction. Technically, they bring nothing to reduce congestion, energy consumption, urban area used.

When we talk about promoting economic development in particularly urban areas, the focus needs to shift from prioritizing car-centric infrastructure towards building accessible, integrated, and sustainable transportation systems that cater to the masses. This means putting emphasis on last-mile connectivity, strengthening public transportation networks, and rethinking the need for excessive flyovers. The above points, obviously should be accompanied with behavioral shifts and awareness raising, promoting electric vehicles, cycling and walking for shorter distances.

I think metro/subway and generally massive transport system is more effective. these type of transport usually used by all group of households from rich to poor.

AVs may be a viable option for developed countries. But, what suits the global North may not work for us in the South. Many South Asian countries, are far from adopting AVs. Before moving towards AVs, fundamental changes are needed. Understanding diverse country scenarios is crucial, considering geography and economics. More focus should be on mass transit development, infrastructure updates, and promoting public transport usage over private vehicles. A comprehensive overhaul involving new regulations, capacity building, and reliable, quality public transportation is crucial. Encouraging and facilitating high-quality, effective modes of public transport, such as BRTs and monorails, will reduce challenges like congestion and pollution.

A combination of efficient mass transit systems and active transportation for shorter commutes/journeys. I believe that mixing different modes of transport is the best way forward. I can use my private car for one activity and walk or use the bus for another activity. More people using different modes of transport (rather than being solely dependent on the private car) will bring along a positive impact. Electric vehicles will not solve congestion issues, they will still have an impact on air pollution (tyre particulate pollution) and they might still be dependent on fossil fuels in the long run.

In India, revolutionizing urban transportation is pivotal for economic advancement. Electric rickshaws stand out as a game-changer. These are not absolutely necessary to urban places and in fact contribute to prolonging the dominance of cars in urban areas. While they don’t emit greenhouse gasses when driving, they do create greenhouse gasses at multiple levels during production and use. Public Investment needs to focus less on EVs and more on active transportation and transit.

The question is unclear: EVs are officially and legally intended as an environmental tool. Do we talk here about two tons urban tanks costing fortunes? Who is that "economy" beneficial for? Please reformulate the question when EVs are set back to their intended goal.

I'm an avid believer in efficient mass transit. Not only as a means to reducing carbon emissions but to truly connect different regions and provide affordable transport to people. In South African the sad reality is that people are still located away from where they work and because of the poor quality of the mass transit people tend to have to rely on taxis,which costs a lot of money. So people tend to work for transport. Although the initial capital investment is high, the long term benefits in my view far outweigh the benefit to low income earners and people who depend on mass transit to get to work. But creating paths that people want to walk or ride, even with electric micro mobility, requires significant changes to the built environment. It’s a worthy ambition, but in isolation it’s a minor thing. Creating liveable, attractive, shaded and interesting communities along with enough density to trigger lots of smaller local destinations is the big play. Starting with the mode rather than the place outcome often creates projects that disappoint. Electric bikes are a great idea when made easily accessible to the public to hire for short amounts of time at low cost and in the right locations. If you can afford to buy one then also great. If they are docked in the right locations in docking stations (and not dumped in the middle of a pavement) then there is huge potential here. Personally I would consider cycling 15km to somewhere and then back the same distance 2 hours later, if there are cycle lanes and appropriate safety measures in place to ensure cyclist are safe from vehicular traffic. Cyclist injuries and fatalities are too high. Roller blades and scooters could be used as long as safety is considered (not sharing with vehicles) and possibly in a separate lane to pedestrians.

Fundamental to have a well designed, pleasant to walk, protected from rain pedestrian network. Most people could walk in small towns, making it more sustainable and healthy. Need to be planned together with public transportation to be efficient. Not every city can have bicycles network, particular high density ones, too much car traffic make it dangerous

We are developing an automatic system of public transport (guided, like a micro-metro) for urban, peri-urban and some country around. It can only operate under totally automatic control, which provides efficiency, capacity, availability, security, long life and low cost. Obtaining such quality levels with automobiles, whatever the type and technology, is clearly out of reach.

If we pursue Smart Mobility, we must embrace efficient modes of transportation. It is implementing technology such as automated vehicles or apps and creating conditions in which every citizen feels safe, energetic, and engages with their community. The smart-mobility should embrace all ways of transportation that are needed in the urban area.

Smart mobility has little utility when it comes to motorists. Typically, its use on roads has been to maintain or increase capacity. Yet, we know that any increase in capacity results in induced demand. This means more motorists will attempt to use a “smart road,” thus exacerbating congestion.

In my experience government, to foster innovation and healthy competition, through governance frameworks should prevent monopolies and promote fair market practices in the smart mobility sector.

Combining various modes of transportation through seamless interoperability and effective urban planning is crucial. In a collaborative effort with city planners and tech experts, we developed an integrated mobility app that provided real-time information on all available transportation options, facilitating a multi-modal and convenient urban travel experience. This approach not only encouraged the use of sustainable modes of transportation but also contributed to the economic growth of local businesses involved in the mobility ecosystem.

Consider accessibility and inclusivity in transportation solutions and technologies to address the needs of all members of society, including those with mobility issues.

I was not aware that walking is a technology. The technology I think is footpaths and here in Indonesia planting trees for shade. And these two technologies should be way on the top of the list and of course everything we need accessible by walking.
