Think of the most challenging situation you have faced and describe how you handled it. For senior positions tell them you establish clear responsibilities and accountabilities for your team . Do things by the book some engineers try and take short cuts which usually turn into a problem.

Confidence is the key and has to be internalised. Do your research about the company. Review your technical skills and knowledge. Brush up on your knowledge of marine systems and equipment. Prepare for common interview questions : Tell me about yourself and your experience as a marine engineer. What are your career goals? Why are you interested in this position and this company? What are your strengths and weaknesses as a marine engineer? Describe a time when you had to solve a difficult problem at work. Practice your answers. Dress professionally and arrive before time. Arrive on time or a few minutes early. Smell good, body odour can be off putting. Be confident and enthusiastic.

Marine Engineering is one of those streams where every technical aspect learnt in school is applicable in the real world. So here are 4 pointers for Interview preparation and what interviewers look for in candidates - 1. Think through the basics: Every element that we deal with onboard behaves as per the laws we learn in school. So be clear with them. 2. Apply what is read: Knowing is not sufficient. We need to know how to use it. After all, Marine Engineers are Operators. 3. It is better to not know than to guess: We either know it or we don't. Half Knowledge = No Knowledge. Mistakes onboard are unforgiving and sometimes fatal. 4. Never Give Up: Acknowledge if we do not know, and then try to find answers, without stopping there.

I would often ask a candidate basic questions, such as with regards to lubrication and oil properties. It is expected that candidates will be familiar with the processes used in their last couple of ships at least. Apart from knowledge, correct answers demonstrate involvement and awareness.

Review core concepts like fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, engines, electricity. Understand formulas, laws, principles. Review the marine vessel/system design and naval architecture. Practice sample calculations for efficiency, power, buoyancy, stability. Know latest engineering standards, regulations, best practices. Research company's specific vessels, technologies if possible. Prepare for theoretical questions and applied problems. Review basics behind new innovations like automation, green energy, materials. Be ready to concisely explain your diagnostic and design approach. Practice explaining complex topics in simple terms for non-engineers.

Listen carefully for the interviewer to finish the questions as sometimes, we get excited and answer the questions too fast. This may send a wrong signal that you are an impatient persons and may add the wrong perspective to your personality

Here are some tips based on my experience: 1. Practice Clarity and Confidence: I prepared by rehearsing answers to common industry-specific questions, using appropriate marine engineering terminology. This helped me speak confidently and clearly during the interview. 2. Active Listening: During the interview, I was asked a complex question about LNG tanker management. I listened attentively and asked for clarification on one of the points. This not only helped me provide a more accurate answer but also showed my engagement and understanding of the subject matter. 3. Concise Responses: When asked about my experience with LNG ships, I gave a concise yet detailed response, avoiding jargon and focusing on key achievements and responsibilities.

Speak clearly, confidently, and politely using appropriate terminology. Avoid excessive jargon or slang. Listen attentively and ask clarifying questions to understand fully. Provide concise, relevant responses tailored to the audience. Be prepared to give a presentation using visual aids, engaging delivery, and articulate Q&A responses. Practice translating complex technical information simply and clearly. Roleplay with a friend or mentor to improve explanation of projects, problem solving, technical details. Video record yourself and review. Ask colleagues for constructive feedback on your communication style. Emphasize team experiences demonstrating communication abilities.

Partnership and team working are essential skills for on job success. Communication is the underlying glue that cements effective partnership and teamwork. By presenting a problem statement and understanding how effectively the candidate drives stakeholder engagement one could get an overall idea of the candidate abilities in forging effective communication across the board.

One basic advise Know your ship . You are reposible for 95% of ship systems and rest are in your responsiblities for proviaon of services. As a marine engg onboard it is imperative that one has clear understanding and tech knowledge of systems ,tech & maint manuals , engg standards and grasp of maint regimes.

Dress professionally - avoid anything too casual, flashy or distracting. A suit is best or at minimum dress pants/skirt with collared shirt and blazer. Be well-groomed and conservative with hair, makeup, accessories. Shine shoes, tidy nails. Bring a portfolio or leather folder for resume copies. Arrive 5-10 minutes early to account for traffic, parking etc. Greet interviewer with a firm handshake, eye contact and smile. Thank them for their time. Be polite to everyone you encounter. Avoid strong cologne/perfume. Turn cell phone off completely. Bring notebook, extra copies of resume. Exude confidence through body language and speech. Make a great first impression!

Firstly, dressing is important but it depends on which jobs you are applying for. If the position is for a shipyard or hands on jobs, then a smart casual is better than a coat or long sleeve with tie as it may send a wrong signal as you are too desk bound type of jobs But if the position is for shore base office jobs such as technical superintendent or marine engineering sales or commercial position, dressing is important. Have come across some companies rejected the candidates due to wrong dress code such as wearing jeans for the interview for sales/ commercial positions

Do try to play scenario based questions and be prepared for answering in the best possible ways especially based on your experience and also do research on scenario based situations as the hiring manager may play scenarios to see how you will react in each scenario? Also need to look at how to answer from which angle? As a marine engineer onboard the ships or as a shore base marine engineers such as technical superintendent.

Leadership on the role is by far the single greatest differentiator. Does a person have a clarity of purpose on the role? How does he/she drive this purpose? Was the leadership style collaborative or directive? Specific examples on display of leadership qualities during challenging moments.. how did the person step back to allow others to lead in order to develop the talent pipeline of the organisation. An understanding of team value and colleagues contribution. Frankness in talking about personal weaknesses during the journey and learnings from them. A good interview while focusing on the technical core can throw up a lot of behavioural nuances that could light up the green or red flag.
