We can manage the metadata repository in several ways and also architecture. But what we need to ensure are: 1. The storage or database you choose are support versioning for auditing, track changes and history. 2. The storage or database has a very flexible data model. 3. The storage or database has capabilities for querying the data with no time. In my opinion we should (or be better) use noSQL database.

Metadata comprises of various facets including Technical Metadata (most common), Business Metadata, Operational Metadata and even Consumption and Usage Metadata. Its essential to consider connecting these various metadata elements together (in a kind of relationship/knowledge graph) so that the different metadata management aspects and their dependencies can be easily corelated and understood by different roles in the Organization.
