I have to speak to a large congregation every week, here is what I do to be heard clearly; 1. I don't mumble words,I make my words clear as possible. 2. I watch my pace.. Pace has a way of adding to the way you sound 3. Confidence also affects the way you sound. The more confident, the more clearer you sound 4. I employ pauses. When you pause at certain intervals, you allow the people digest the words so it sounds clearer in their mind.

When you are on stage, breathing can be used in two ways. One is already stated in the article. The second is when you do deep breathing just before going to stage, it clear all the thoughts and fills you with calmness and that is super important for any speaker as well.

After years of public speaking, the first minute is still a challenge sometimes. If you are new to public speaking, prepare something for the first minute to busy yourself with, e.g. adjusting the microphone or even drinking a little water. Meanwhile, make eye contact with your audience with a smile on your face. Their feedback (most probably a smile back) can calm you down. Know your audience and their expectations before your go on stage and be prepared for them. This will solve most of the anxiety issue because you are more self-confident.

Lots of great comments but for me confidence is the feeling you need to foster. It allows you to relax which gives you the best chance of giving your best performance. I use music to get me prepared. I listen to my favourite songs that get me in a motivated but light hearted mood. I also visualise the event going really well with smiling faces and an engaged audience.

Along with improving your articulation try and remove the auditory clatter. By this I mean remove the Non-words (the "umms", "errrs" and "ahhs") and Filler-words ("you know what I mean", "so" and "like". Removing these will increase your clarity, credibility and authority with the audience on the subject that you're discussing.

The easiest way to reach an audience is using the most simplistic language in articulate form. If you put your 3rd grade vocabulary to use, all, from nearly any background can understand.

Excellent insight here. Speaking too softly will bore your audience and speaking too loud can make them uncomfortable. This is something I usually ask is “can you hear me in the back?” They love giving feedback usually and it makes them realize how much you care about them.

When speaking without a mic, I find it helpful to look at the farthest audience members. The visual aim helps you to adjust volume more naturally, and looking towards the back also gives you an opportunity to check for visual cues. Are people craning forward or turning their heads to hear you? Speak up! For microphones, I always ask 3 questions before presenting: How should I hold this to best pick up sound, where are the speakers located, and is the volume adjustable? The first is self explanatory, but the other two need careful consideration. If the speakers face or are over the audience, but not you, then you will sound louder to their ears than yours. If volume is not adjustable, have a peer listen and adjust your voice as needed.

In addition to adjusting volume and pitch, you can also play with speed. Slowing your speed can help to emphasize key points, while increasing your speed in short bursts can reinforce enthusiasm and excitement.

My Theatre Arts professor the late Dr. Waigwa Wachira taught us to assume that we were addressing the person in the middle of the audience and the rest would work itself out. Obviously this wouldn't be a technique to use while using a microphone. Breathing calmly is a great as well as listening to yourself speak. Practising on a mirror or self-recording for self critique is also a great way.

Not only should you watch for the right volume and pitch, not only must you vary it to prevent sounding monotone, but you should consciously adjust to further enforce your points. Shouting and whispering are both generally better avoided, but again, at the right time, shouts and whispers can be effective. When you're offering a perspective, a lighter, more casual tone can convey humility. When you're making a humorous observation, smile and let your voice modulate up, let people know it's okay to chuckle. When you're sharing something somber, take your time, show some hesitation. And when you're being serious and hammering home your key takeaway - a calm, authoritative, measured tone is imperative.

In my experience what helps the most is finding your personal connection to your topic. Usually when we are passionate about something, our tone, pace and even gestures become exactly what we need - and come naturally.

The first thing to acknowledge is that nervousness is natural, and it can be managed. First, practice, practice, practice the speech before the day including saying it aloud a few times to find the right pace and tone. Second, do not try to yell or push or strain your voice because you might not sound natural. Third, breathe deeply. You can even tell the audience why you do it and have them breathe with you. Fourth, maintain an even pace with a focus on enunciation - repeat one of two or your profound statements for effect - get the audience to relax and stay with you. Fifth, get to the venue early and on stage for a mic check so that you feel good about your tone and volume. Remember, you are the expert! They already like you. HAVE FUN.

Pause, at the right moment. This is what grips their attention, makes them hold onto their seats and brings a pin drop silence in that hall. Having catered to an audience of over 1000 folks, I have learnt that your tempo becomes the audience's attention wave. For example, each story or illustration of a fact, delivered with a low tempo and pitch, followed by a higher thump at the climax gives a more dramatic and artistic effect, that any audience in the world is a fan of. When people go to a talk, they aren't just looking for a well rehearsed, well researched presentation (though that helps!). They're looking to connect with you, the speaker onstage. By varying your tone, pace, and presentation, you're able to give a more "human" appearance to the audience, which will help you build rapport and connect with more folks around you.

A great trick is to pretend to search for the right words. Adds energy to what you are saying and a sense of drama . You can even add in a searching phrase ‘what’s the right word here…’

I started my public speaking career with a TEDx talk in front of 600 people (hint: bad idea). One thing ive found helpful, especially if someone I know is present, is specifically ask them to observe and critique. I'll often use them as a visual checkin throughout the presentation. Its an easy way to get quick feedback on pitch and pace, if I need to breathe, or having trouble being heard

Another way you can practice is by recording yourself speaking and listening to it when you’re done. It will enable you to note where and how to improve. It is also a good way to build self-confidence. Practice with your friends,ask for feedbacks,watch other speakers and try to be open to constructive criticisms.

Work from an outline. You're less likely to get tongue tied or be as nervous. Never read word for word. Most people cannot sound natural doing that, and you lose your audience Never read your slides as your presentation. PLEASE don't read your slides.

My knees were shaking because I was so nervous standing behind the podium. I was about to sing - solo & a cappella - the US and Canadian National Anthems for a ceremony awarding WWII veterans the Congressional Medal of Honor. If your voice feels trembly from nervousness, do three things: 1) Push your shoulders back and breathe deeply into your core (not your lungs, your shoulders shouldn't rise). 2) Briefly squeeze your butt muscles (yes, really, this gives support to your diaphragm) 3) Remember that it's not about you. When speaking to an audience, be it 5 or 500, there should be an element of entertainment. People react well to movement, physically and sonically. Play with volume, tone, speed, movement, they all work together like an orchestra. Think of the conductor, gently waiving their baton (I had to look up "what do you call a conductor's stick?"). The Orchestra plays softly and you lean in to her the notes of each instrument. Then the conductor starts waiving and shaking almost violently and the volume and intensity increase and you're thrown back in your seat! Your voice is your orchestra and you must conduct it to guide your audience through your story! Have fun, Get a little crazy!

Start your speech with something about you, and tell the story of how the situation could be relevant to anyone in the room. This can engage the audience early on and they will not lose interest in your talk, as they have found something about themselves in it.

Public speaking is a muscle you have to exercise it. Practice practice practice. Also don’t prattle off a bunch of statistics. Tell a story. Your audience will retain more and it’s easier for the speaker to remember.

In my experience, confidence is a key factor for public speaking. This is confidence that the proper research has taken place, confidence that the one speaking has the authority to speak into the lives of the crowd listening, and confidence based out of humility that it is actually the right time to speak. Yes, there are refining skills that can and should be worked on. However, genuine passion that is birthed out of a humble yet confident message is what will inspire others to act.
