Improve communication? Build connection? Once you have that, determine what behaviors would indicate that the training effectively achieved the purpose. For example, you could measure a variance in Slack interactions to see if communication is more open. You could measure the number of employee complaints to HR if you want to address conflict. Teambuilding should serve a purpose higher than mandatory fun. Connection is important, but if there are no lasting changes in behaviors, it would be difficult to consider a teambuilding training event a success.

I run a monthly meeting for the Project department that is dedicated to re-aligning ourselves with process and objectives. The make-up of these sessions consist of fun, collaboration, debate and learning. For me the key measure is that of inclusiveness and engagement. I need the whole team to work at their optimum, without this our targets and efficiencies will not be achieved. By adopting this key measure allows me to better understand barriers. How well does our team adapt to changes? Team Dynamics: How would you rate the communication within our team? How well does our team cooperate on tasks? How effectively does our team coordinate activities? Team Climate: How would you rate the level of trust within our team? How much respect is there among team members? How supportive are team members of each other? Team Satisfaction: How much do you enjoy working with our team? How motivated are you by our team’s goals? How much fun do you have working with our team?

Here's a good litmus test for survey questions: what will I do next if I receive negative feedback on (this question re:) training? If there isn't a clear action dictated by the way the question is worded, your data becomes less useful. Example of ambiguously worded question, that does not drive action: "How effective was the guest speaker? Rate your feelings from 1 (very ineffective) to 5 (very effective)." VS a more action-driven adaptation of the question: "How knowledgeable was the guest speaker? Rate your feelings from 1 (very ineffective) to 5 (very effective)." The latter ties a low ranking to low knowledge, while a low ranking on the former leaves us with ambiguity on what was ineffective about the guest speaker.

Here are examples for each aspect. Open-ended Questions: “In what ways do you think our team could improve our project coordination?” Closed-ended Questions: “On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the level of cooperation within our team?” Positive and Neutral Language: Instead of asking “What problems did you encounter during the project?”, ask “What challenges did you face during the project?” Consistent Scales: “On a scale of 1-5, where 1 is ‘Not at all satisfied’ and 5 is ‘Very satisfied’, how satisfied are you with the communication within our team?” Specific and Concrete: Instead of asking “Do you like our team meetings?”, ask “How useful do you find our weekly team meetings in terms of project progress?”
