Keeping a running estimate of your capabilities, key pieces of equipment, personnel and processes allows you to see yourself in time and space. Additionally, you need to share this running estimate and keep it updated to provide a common operating picture that creates shared understanding of the environment. With shared understanding you can develop critical information requirements that will help you develop decision points as certain pieces of information are obtained to drive actions that will maintain business operations and capability. Training will further build depth and continuity of the team to decentralize execution.

Lean principles work well in stable environments. Logistics is sometimes a stable environment, but the last few years have not been. Demand driven concepts work well, but typically do not respond well in step change situations, so make sure you have early detection to alert if you are outside your design parameters. Concepts like right first time, reduce latency, and waste elimination work anywhere.

Automation, integration, and optimization can be achieved through the use of digital solutions, allowing for improved data collection, analysis, and communication. IT solutions can be expensive, long &risky to implement, and increase your fixed costs. Consider partnering with a 3PL who already uses these solutions to get you started, then have a joint plan to take in-house.

Make sure you know and have articulated clearly what and why you are striving to achieve. Show how and why what is being done today doesn't cut it. Show what the future state will look like, and go out and promise that to the broader stakeholder community. Ask them what that means to them, how they will know we are there. That will give you context for the initiative and key aspects for your user acceptance testing.
