One major problem I have seen many times, is a lack of support within the practice to support a true practice manager! I have worked with clients who wondered why their offices were in a mess, and in the end, it was always the same thing. They hired off the street and attempted to train someone. A solid practice manager won't cost money, they will be well worth their salary. One recent example was in a very busy location who turned over staff quickly. Treat these people like professionals and let them to what they do while you see patients! The MGMA in every state has local chapters, and state meetings, regional and national conferences. They can learn from some top minds! Fully develop your practice manager, and you'll be glad you did!

I could take up this entire screen with books, and webinars, and other tools available for home study! My specific interests lie in leadership development, and I find it really helpful to listen to some of the greats, and some folks familiar here in the Tar Heel State. I follow Quint Studer closely, and I encourage others to do the same, particularly the physicians! Quint's new book, The Calling, tells us why what we do in health care is more than a job! I listen to my friend Matt Doherty, who now does executive coaching, and he is outstanding! There is a lot of material available. Combine it with coaching and build a great practice manager!

In my hometown, we had a local Medical Managers Association. A local chapter of the state MGMA. It comes, and goes, and one of the most difficult things to do is to get them out of the office for a lunch and lesson! But the salaries were low! Forming a peer group like that could be invaluable to helping improve these managers! Some are really strong, and experienced. Some are brand new! That networking could help!
