E learning is a part of a significant process of learning communication skills that can be career building and life saving for Criminal Justice practitioners. Communication skills can make or break a person interested in Criminal Justice. Practice via e learning modules is a great building block on development of supervisory expertise.

What an important question. I think one of the greatest challenges in leadership development in our field is moving new supervisors into transformative skills to add to the needed transactional skills that previously made them successful. Exploring and implementing interactive e learning has the promising opportunity to build capacity in augmenting effective instructional design and building leaders effective in today’s workforce . Tired curriculum with little interaction will not do it. We have exciting possibilities if technology is used thoughtfully.

Learning how to create a team is one significant skill. Getting practice in managing a team you are given is quite a different and challenging process. E learning modules allow practice to make mistakes before trying them in the workplace.

Taking a deep dive into truly understanding the impact of increased emotional intelligence will both directly and inadvertently optimize learning and application of any additional leadership development efforts. Investing in the design and development of high-quality content on this topic is money and time well spent.

Consider including an extremely difficult “no right answer” scenario exercise or multiple choice quiz early in the training. In my experience, many leaders or people aspiring to leadership positions think they know more than they do and may not pay as much attention to the content because they think they already know the right answers. Providing them with a “learn through failure” scenario upfront can shock them into paying more attention to the training.

Consider adding interactions where they have to type their answers, record their response to a conversation prompt, work through an uphill battle scenario like winning over a team, or even complete a book report by answering prompts. Adding these more strategic interactions along with in-person or virtual webinar sessions where they can ask questions and discuss as a group will be most impactful.
