This will help you intuitively understand business economics i.e. revenue and cost drivers, the most fundamental and critical aspect of businesses 2. Familiarize yourself with commonly used business frameworks e.g. Porter's 5 forces, BCG matrix, SWOT, etc. Make sure to combine/ adapt these to the specific problem at hand 3. Subscribe to publications like the FT, WSJ, industry reports etc. to stay updated on the latest business happenings

Consultants need to have a strong business acumen. I would argue that this is a fundamental hard skill. Having a strong business acumen lends to a deep understanding of how businesses operate, make decisions, and create value. Consultants with strong business acumen can develop and execute strategies that drive sustainable growth and competitive advantage for their clients.

Constructing business acumen for a novice involves immersion in the business arena. Nobody grasps every nuance of a specific business or its value-creation drivers instantly. Direct experience forms the cornerstone. Accessing a firm's project database within a specific field offers insight. Additionally, it's prudent to follow esteemed authors and pertinent literature on the subject. In my experience, this multi-faceted approach fosters robust business acumen over time.

Consultants needs to have strong business acumen. Following are few techniques to sharpen Business Acumen 'on the job': 1. I would add to this list a key skill that possibly should be in the top five, which is interpersonal skills. Consulting is a team sport - teaming with client stakeholders and also your own delivery team. So interpersonal skills are table stakes. Building and maintaining positive relationships with clients, listening to and understanding their needs helps with providing valuable solutions. Working effectively within a team is needed to foster a collaborative and supportive environment where results flourish.

I believe that a very important part of project management is effective communication skills. Consultants will need to be able to convey project goals, progress, and challenges to various stakeholders. Also, leadership is crucial for guiding and motivating project teams, resolving conflicts, and ensuring adherence to quality standards. Lastly, adaptability is key, as consultants must be flexible in adjusting project plans to address unexpected changes.

Regardless of the tool used (Jira, Monday, Teamwork, etc.), a project manager's essence lies in consistently tracking milestones and tasks. It's akin to an obsession: organizing, convening, and leading stakeholder sessions to ensure project alignment. Often, stakeholders won't proactively update the PM on progress; hence, the PM must actively follow, certify, inform, and close every project gate. Mandatory action plans addressing issues, risks, and deviations are crucial. Maintaining a live document to record, update, and report status to the team and upper management is essential.

Presentation skills are vital for management consultants as they serve as a cornerstone for effective communication, client engagement, and professional credibility. These skills enable consultants to convey complex information clearly, engage clients persuasively, and influence decision-making. A consultant's ability to deliver compelling presentations not only fosters trust and confidence in their expertise but also strengthens client relationships and contributes to business success. Furthermore, strong presentation skills facilitate team collaboration, aid in winning new projects, and are crucial for career advancement within consulting firms, showcasing the consultant's capability to communicate ideas effectively.

Based on my experience, a well-structured weekly presentation should entail the following components: - Report the current status ('as is') - Highlight potential areas for improvement and their value - Propose solutions or outline envisioned scenarios ('to be') - Identify obstacles to implementation - Detail the action plan and its progress - Outline the upcoming steps For each workstream, guide the client through these steps to instill a sense of accountability for presenting each workstream's progress to upper management.

This and communication skills in general trump any technical or business knowledge. For better or worse, a mediocre idea presented well beats a good idea presented poorly. Every time in the history of ever. For bonus points, learn to do it WITHOUT leaning on things like PowerPoint, Prezi, Canva, and the like. All of history's truly great communicators managed to get that status without them. So can you.

Their diverse backgrounds offer a unique external perspective, complemented by extensive business expertise, ensuring a fresh, critical outlook. This fresh insight holds significant value for clients, often overlooking evident situations despite them being apparent. A consultant's role is to provide a new perspective, guiding clients through issues impacting profitability, and leveraging their ability to discern what may escape those deeply immersed in daily operations.

Critical thinking is, in my opinion, is most important for consultants. The ability to analyze complex problems, evaluate information objectively, and make informed decisions is essential. This skill allows consultants to navigate uncertainties, anticipate potential outcomes, and devise strategic approaches that align with organizational goals.

Understanding various frameworks is also essential. This can include internal as well as public frameworks. Frameworks can significantly reduce the time for critical thinking and analysis.

Being able to listen so you can understand the people and the issues. Some consultants go in with all the answers and their recommendations go in the trash

Also, need to consider Client Relationship Management. Building and maintaining strong client relationships is crucial for consultants. Consultants to understand clients' needs and expectations in order to establish a long-term partnerships.

Besides the skills shared, I feel the finance and legal understanding are the two critical skills. Business is at the end of the day is money, and the ability to understand the financial health, financial calculations and manipulation , the ability to take risk becomes crucial if the organisation really needs to work. Astute understanding of the Legal framework and reading the socio political scenario is not just part of the SWOT analysis, an astute businessman can actually influence the environment too.

Management consultants need a combination of technical or "hard" skills to excel in their roles. Project management, technology, integration, change management, effective communication, supply, chain, management, data, visualisation and risk management These hard skills, combined with the aforementioned soft skills, contribute to a well-rounded skill set for management consultants, enabling them to deliver valuable insights and drive positive change for their clients.
