Most of the time I, personally find that the most efficient campaign optimizations aren't really logical, I always found experimenting with content, formats and strategies to push for the final last 5 percent.

Don't chase empty metrics for their own sake. You can increase your CTR by increasing your bid = higher position on the search results = more clicks. But you should only increase your bid when you are getting results to justify investing more - not to chase CTR. Understand what the data and use it to guide you to find real problems - then solve those. CTR looks low? Are you matching to irrelevant traffic? Add negative keywords. Ad copy not great? Improve ad copy. Fraudulent clicks? Block IPs.

A few important guidelines: 1. Testing needs to be focused on your key metrics. It is important to identify your primary and secondary test metrics carefully. For example, if you need more conversions from your ads, just increasing your CTR by testing doesn’t make sense if that’s not leading to conversions. 2. Make sure you did not make significant changes to the campaign/s that you are looking to test in the past two weeks. 3. If the performance of your campaigns have peaked, try testing for other ad copies/ CTA/ landing pages. Similarly if your performance has dipped, try testing out variations.

Even though it makes a lot of sense, we must keep in mind that the vast majority of campaigns are not even optimized in the most simple way. What about ensuring that the ABC is done before moving to the next step? In my POV simple things such as : - a proper split of budget between the most efficient (reg ROI) campaigns and the "exploratory" ones. - the use of a proper attribution model to allocate budget properly and maximize efficiency? For some it may sound obsolete, however I bet that most companies and their digital marketers could benefit from enhancing the existing properly before even considering innovating!

Since longer tail keywords tend to be more descriptive this also helps ensure your landing page matches the intent of the visitor you paid for. Utilizing descriptive and well targeted keywords, regardless of their search popularity will help to ensure visits with a higher probability of converting. Last, it's always best to start with a small budget to get a feel for the pace and to make small adjustments as needed. Gradually raise your budget as you go.
