What are the most common time-wasters in leadership development coaching?

For me, coaching conversation becomes wasted when both the client and the coach do not know where are headed to. This causes a drain on both the emotional and the mental energies for both. It could lead to a feeling that the coaching conversation did not culminate into a fruitful outcome for the client. That's why the International Coach Federation states that " Setting the Agreement" as one of the most important pieces in a coaching conversation. This ensure clarity around what the client wants to make happen in that particular coaching conversation. This clarity will help with the direction and inturn reduces the wastage of time.

The most crucial conversation between client and coach is “are you coachable?” This needs to be honestly considered and articulated. What are your motivations? What happens if you fail?

Knowing 'What you want as the outcome' will help one to have clear goals of the coaching intervention. Once the goals are identified, the Coach & the Coachee must set the objectives of the intervention based on the priority of achieving those objectives. This will help in creating a road map towards achieving those objectives successfully during the set time period.

A lot of leadership development still remains a 'fit for all' approach. While some common elements are essential, what is critical is the scope for individualization and customization. Corporate Needs and Individual needs may be at odds, for any coaching to be impactful, the client/coachee remains the decision maker. While as a coach you'll be the navigator, you can't make decisions for the coachee/client

You've probably heard this before, but it's worth hearing again... proper preparation prevents poor performance. Whether we're talking about your own leadership development, or the development of other leaders, a plan is imperative. We're talking about increasing a skillset that will help you succeed in your professional AND personal life. Without a plan, how would you know what specific leadership skills you need to improve upon? How would you know you are improving? How would you know when you have reached the desired skill level? Do you know your desired skill level? I suggest beginning with a leadership assessment to understand what skills need developing. There are many great assessments on the market. My go-to is the Judgement Index.

Another time waster in leadership development coaching is not creating a time blocked schedule for coaching sessions. Also, time could be potentially wasted if the topic(s) of upcoming sessions aren't defined & communicated... which could lead to unpreparedness. Alignment & clarity of the overall leadership development coaching objective(s) and proper planing are fundamentally crucial to the overall success of the journey.
