A fourth common team effectiveness challenge is the conflict and dysfunction that can arise among team members. Conflict is the disagreement or tension that occurs when there are incompatible goals, interests, or opinions, while dysfunction is the breakdown or impairment of the normal functioning of a team. Although some conflict can be constructive and stimulate creativity and innovation, too much conflict can be destructive and damage relationships and performance. Similarly, dysfunction can result from factors such as lack of trust, accountability, commitment, or focus. To overcome this challenge, team leaders and members need to manage conflict effectively by identifying the root causes, acknowledging different perspectives, seeking common ground, and resolving issues collaboratively. They also need to build trust, accountability, commitment, and focus by establishing clear norms and rules of engagement, holding each other responsible for results, supporting each other's decisions, and staying focused on the team's goals.
