What are the most common security issues with single-page applications?

However, SPAs not properly handling tokens can still be vulnerable. On the other hand, CSRF is a common issue in traditional websites that rely on cookies for session management without additional CSRF protections are particularly vulnerable.

From my experience, when conducting penetration testing on Single Page Applications (SPAs), we commonly encounter issues primarily related to authorization. Developers often focus on filtering views based on user roles but overlook the fact that a malicious user can access APIs using proxies. Consequently, a low-level user may still gain access to endpoints associated with high-level role functions. It's crucial to perform thorough authorization checks at the backend to ensure that endpoints are accessible to users based on their roles.

Authentication and authorization mechanisms in SPAs must be robust to prevent unauthorized access. Weak authentication processes, insufficient session management, or improperly implemented token systems can lead to security breaches. SPAs should use strong authentication methods, secure token storage, and enforce proper authorization checks to ensure that users have the necessary permissions for their actions. Regularly update and patch authentication libraries to address known vulnerabilities.

Authentication and Authorization play a major on SPA's. Here are some common vulnerabilities in A&A. 1. Check for common Username and password. 2. Check for brute forcing. 3. Check for MFA bypass 4. Invalid Input 5. Path Traversal 6. Injection/XSS 7. Response Tampering Some best practices to implement A&A 1. Using OAuth2.0 2. Use backend to validate the creds 3. Include roles and permission in the JWT payload.

The Oauth authentication flow in SPA should be carefully designed. Public clients are those that run in places where secrets could be exposed as part of the source code or if the binaries are decompiled (like SPA). It is not a good practive to store the client_Secret in the client-side code of the SPA. Backend For Frontend (BFF) authentication pattern should be used in practice for SPAs. The BFF pattern for authentication emerged to mitigate any risk that may occur from negotiating and handling access tokens from public clients running in a browser. The name also implies that a dedicated backend must be available for performing all the authorization code exchange and handling of the access and refresh tokens.

Single Page Application has a number of benefits more so if we are after UX enjoying na native environment of the application but it has security issues bordering on XSS, session management among others. Hence, architecture is key. The dev team must ensure that security risks on the client side are tested very well and remediated. Also, developer should adhere to IAM policies esp on least privilege.
