-The starting point to prevent Electrical Shocks & Burns is the RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statement), make sure these have been written by a certified electrical specialist who has experience with R & D projects. Ensure each and every operative has understood and duly signs these -The fixed wiring system has been tested and is in date and that any outstanding items have been satisfactorily completed and certified. - Any specialised Areas such as "Explosive Atmospheres" are marked and barriered. The installation has all the signed documentation and are in date. -All portable electrical equipment has been PAT tested and the equipment is in date. -Ensure all operatives are certified and suitably trained and familiar on the equipment.

To mitigate the risk of Fire and explosion it is necessary to address this in the RAMS and have a current Fire Risk assessment in place. -All items identified in the Fire Risk assessment addressed and put into place prior to the start of the R & D project, including Fire Drills, Evacuations Etc. and regular practice of these drills. -Fire prevention, detection, suppression and extraction systems installed and maintained by organisations who are trained and familiar with the equipment. -Visual inspection of equipment prior to each and every use for wear and tear and missing parts such as guards etc. -Isolation or removal of faulty equipment and equipment overdue for maintenance -Insist on good house keeping practices

Operatives working in a R & D environment are specialist in that field and are often preoccupied with their thoughts on the project. -Procedures need to be in place to remove or reduce the risk of human error, it will also be necessary to "Police" these procedures. -Consultation with the senior members of the team to produce safe working practices that are workable and manageable will go along way mitigate this. -Another cause of Errors is tiredness, monitoring individuals and ensuring that regular breaks are taken and a restriction on the maximum hours worked by individuals. -Continuous training on equipment and procedures and regular tool box talks on current tasks and up and coming tasks will keep the operatives focused.
