What are the most common power tool safety mistakes?

In my experience , lack of Training , SOP and Supervision and discipline are four common tool for safety mistake. Employees have to learn required knowledge and right information of their job hazards and risk factors and the ways of combating them.

It is my experience that manuals are too long and contains a lot of additional information which is not relevant for the user. Instead of referring to a manual - for most equipment we create an easy to follow procedure based on manual and risk assessment. Procedure includes mandatory PPE, and is available near equipment. But evenly important is proper and consistent training in use of equipment ??

In my experience, most workers: 1. Don't have a clue where to find the manual 2. They will not seek it out and definitely will not read it. 3. In many cases, training is not initiated and properly documented for specific tools. 4. If this is not part of your system it should be

Manual book is a very important thing. From there you can read, learn, understand how the equipment working, how to start, trouble shoot if there is a problem. In the manual also we can see the therm and condition of the equipment. So, ignoring manual is a bih mistake.

One thing I have found helpful is to dovetail the information in the manual into your SWP. Workers will not read, reference, or remember (if they were forced to go through it) the manual. Part of HSE's responsibility should be to include relevant information from manuals into appropriate programs such as operating equipment, inspection criteria, maintenance cycle, etc. This way, as part of the training and development for workers, the manufacturers' recommended practices are integrated into the HSE management system.

I think it's also important to have a clear workspace without any distractions or obstacles. It can be hard to predict what could go wrong, so we should do our best to minimize potential hazards.

The monthly inspection tag or sticker that commonly displayed on the tools is not a guarantee that the power tools is safe to be used for the whole month! Thorough inspection must be conducted regularly before using it. The malfunction or unsafe condition of the tools could be occurred overnight; thus inspection of the power tools must not be skipped.

In my experience, most employee will grab a power tool and assume it is in working order. They seem to not remember to inspect the equipment before use because their mind is on completing the task, but not the task at hand.

Issue’s completing peruse inspections can be linked to lack of information on the operation of equipment, complacency due to routine activities, lack of confidence to stop the job and ask if unsure.

Inspection is crucial action in for any equipment. Not only for tools, but also for the secondary equipment. For example, hydraulic system for any movement part. Not only leakage what we are looking for, also scheduling inspection/ pressure test for any connection and high pressure hose. In the static equipment, tank or pipe, sometimes we are forget about corrotion under insulation. This is also potential leakage even up to blast the pipe or tank.

To get started, use 29 CFR 1910 sections 132-140 - Subpart I - Personal Protective Equipment as they relate to your operations. As needed, conduct required written hazard assessment(s), training and documentation.

Lets be honest, no one is 'forgetting' their PPE... it is the workers choice to, wear it, if not supplied, to request it, and to speak up if not trained or familiar with the tool. Poor supervision allows all of these things to occur.

1. Fire safety rated rubber matt's at prominent locations near hi power equipments / appliances. 2. Usage of personal protective equipments including safety shoes. 3. Proper earthing of power panels.

PPE is the most common thing that our employees forget most of times, so I will encourage you to not give up on the inspection and to make sure everyone's safety is well done. Thank you

PPE is designed for un confortable use, but without PPE we put our body in danger. We never know the hidden potential hazard. Eventough we are using correct PPE, if there is any incident, still we will effected. But we could minimalized it.

Due to the portability of this type of equipment the focus can be directed on the end use where the tool is being used and often the power lead is a second thought, being aware of surroundings and completing a risk assessment before any task should include the surrounding area and consider any SIMOPS which may also affect the routing of cables and extension leads

Look at your work area, plan where you are going to run cables, are the cables being used suitable for the environment (E.G. external use) if you are going to reduce voltage then any extensions should be after the transformer and not before. Keep the transformer as close to the power source as possible. Run all extension cables (these should also be PAT tested) out of the way, not causing a trip hazard or where they could be run over by transport, away from heat sources.

One thing I see people missing is not understanding the cord to use. A 14-gauge cord usually a good deal cheaper, is suitable for medium-duty use, such as powering power tools and small appliances. It can handle up to 15 amps of current and is suitable for cords up to 100 feet in length.? A 12 gauge cord is for heavy duty use like powering large tools or multiple tools. It can handle up to 20 amps and can be up to 150 feet long. The cost is usually substantially higher so most people opt for the smaller cord which may not be the right choice. Safety tip, if the cord feels or gets hot, you probably have the wrong cord or are pulling too much amperage through it.

In my experience , one of the more frequent observations of personnel working at heights is either using the extension cord or power cord as a hand-line to get the tool to elevation, which of course can damage the cord. Stop, coach and correct.

One thing I've learned over the years is to never underestimate the importance of proper support for your workpiece. A wobbly or unstable piece of material can be very dangerous and lead to uneven cuts or injuries.

All of job should have TRA/JSA. Even for simple job. For example, fixing lose bolt at below grating. To reach it, we need to build scaffolding. So, to fix the bolt, we will climb scaffolding. Make sure the scaffolding is approved to use before climb, use safety body hardness, using cord for the tools to avoid falldown. Baricade the area under the working area ( scaffolding ). So, follow TRA, don't take shortcut.

Another thing to consider is the maintenance of the power tool itself. Just like a car, power tools need regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and safely. I always make sure to clean and lubricate my tools and keep an eye on their performance. - In addition to neglecting the work area, another safety mistake I've seen is people not being fully aware of their surroundings. It's important to know where other workers, equipment, or hazards are and to communicate clearly with others in the area. - I've also noticed that people sometimes get overconfident or complacent when using power tools that they're familiar with.

Line of fire needs to be considered by the tool operator. The line of fire is where the tool, cuttings or other material could be released during the work and strike the worker or bystanders. This needs to be considering using tool to determine what is the possible line of fire to avoid being in line with the potential cuttings or other material which could strike the worker. Use of PPE will help, however a higher level of control is to avoid being the line of fire and barricading the area to keep others out of the line of fire.

How about when workers bypass safety features. Taking off guards or holding the guards out of the way "just for a minute" to "get the job done quicker". Accident waiting to happen!

Not looking after tools and treating them like they are disposable. Additionally not quarantining or disposing of tools when faults are found.

Incorrectly modifying tools is a dangerous practice. Removing guards, handles, etc. puts the employee at risk. Altering the power cord is also a common mistake.
