You need to devote time and energy for the betterment of people in your network. It's important to show empathy to understand the issues faced by people in your network and try your best to offer needed support to emancipate people in your network from their grievances.
When you network it should ALWAYS be about your ability to leverage your value to someone who didn't realize they needed it. Sure you can be looking to meet people in your industry that can help you. But as discussed above know what you want to ask the specific person about and be sure to have done your homework. Don't ask them to do something for you when they don't have a clue who you are. I have people come and meet me at events all the time; they want to hand me their portfolio and ask to work with me. I have ended up mentoring several people off of this exchange. They had everything going for them but they were too pushy expecting a yes but didn't know how to leverage the convo by bringing value and service instead.

Genuinely building new relationships and discovering how you can help them is phenomenally rewarding and long term, is the best thing for you too. This discovery might happen after the initial event so following up is important, so I agree with the other person’s comment above. Be helpful and giving. You will make a difference to those who have the pleasure to meet you. You will benefit too. Be patient. Invest in the relationships that make sense. They will invest in you.

Networking is a matter of consistency! The more you keep in touch, the stronger the relationship you have started. However, I care quality over quantity: your contacts will appreciate your approach if you don't bother them with too many calls and messages.
One thing I have found very helpful to keep in touch with people you meet, is to create a networking database, which houses all your contacts. Whenever you meet someone, add them to your database and then follow up on a regular basis. I personally use Notion to do this and then add the following parameters: ? Priority: I differentiate between 1, 3, 6, and 12 months follow ups, depending on how well you know the person. ?City: That way I can filter, when I am visiting a new city and quickly pull together a dinner. ?Tags: I use tags e.g. for hobbies and how you know them. ?Birthday: People appreciate it, if you call them on their birthday. ?Other important info I then follow up with 1-3 people per day. This keeps my network strong.

How can those in your network benefit? ? Giving without expecting. ? Aiming to grow together. ? Asking oneself how can one help others to grow? It'll help in avoiding mistakes. The network then that's being built is based on just not give and take. It must be well defined, well thought out based on actions that will be reflective of a genuine interest, creating genuine solutions that will be enriching and adding value. A basic rule in networking: in your interaction with any person you are talking to: (1) can you listen enough to identify what is value that they are looking for, said or unsaid? (2) how can you offer value to that person based on what they value rather than what you think they should value? Even if you are right in what you think they should value, why should they trust you if you are not giving them some value that they are actually looking for? Giving value to the other person in your interaction does not mean selling a solution, offering a solution, or giving free advice. Giving value is that after your interaction with you, they get something for themselves: validation, acknowledgement, food for thought, new perspective...
Here are my five main tips to not make these networking mistakes: ??Be approachable and initiate the first step: Ask people relevant questions and approach them with an open mind. ??Help without expecting anything in return: If you help people without expecting anything in return, most people will want to help you back. ??Do not bond over negativity: Don't complain about your job, or the bad transportation to the event, but rather radiate positivity. ??Keep your conversations short and meaningful: You can always come back to people, if you want to extend your conversation. In the first meeting focus on building a lasting relationship in a short time ??Always have a goal in mind: E.g. At a networking event, try to meet 5 new people.
