1 Cyberattacks on vehicle networks

Vehicle networks are composed of different electronic control units (ECUs) that communicate with each other and with external devices, such as smartphones, sensors, and roadside units. Cyberattacks on these networks can be used to disrupt, manipulate, or steal data from the communications, or to take control of the vehicle functions. Examples of such attacks include spoofing, jamming, injection, and eavesdropping. Spoofing involves sending fake messages to impersonate a legitimate device or ECU. Jamming is when an attacker interferes with the wireless signals of the vehicle network. Injection is inserting malicious code or commands into the vehicle network to alter data or functionality of the ECUs. Eavesdropping is intercepting and monitoring data exchanged in the vehicle network to gain access to sensitive information.

Cyberattacks on back-end systems can aim to damage, delete, or steal data, or to disrupt or hijack the services and updates. Examples of these attacks include Denial-of-service (DoS), where an attacker floods the back-end systems with fake requests or traffic to overload them; Ransomware, where an attacker encrypts the data or systems of the back-end systems and demands a ransom; Data breach, where an attacker exploits a vulnerability or weak password to access confidential data; and Malware, where an attacker infects the back-end systems with malicious software that can perform harmful actions. These cyberattacks can have serious consequences for businesses, so it is important to be aware of them.
